"Consoles At My PC" @ GWJ |
|
Not strictly RPG-related but Gamers with Jobs' Elysium has written an excellent piece on the impact consoles are having on the PC gaming lansdscape. Fallout 3 and Deus Ex: Invisible War are used as examples and here's a snippet:
And, it’s just one example of a growing trend. What I mean when I say console games are ruining PC gaming is not that there will be no more PC games, but that far too many will kneel before the golden cash cow, sell out PC gamers to the needs of the console. Too many PC games that have been developed for cross platforms don’t utilize the strengths of a computer, not in interface, not in complexity, not in depth, and not in technical aspects. Imagine for a second what a great game like Knights of the Old Republic might have been if developed for the PC from the start. Imagine if the original design of Halo and the great ideas expressed first by Bungie had come to fruition.
Check it out here. |

The link is not working...perhaps the website is down. I can get the gist of the article from the excerpt, and I agree somewhat. It's not entirely consoles fault, though. Aiming at the lowest common denominator has been a trend in many forms of entertainment for a while now. PC's used to be purchased by more technically advanced and affluent people. Now that the PC is ubiquitous, PC gaming is subject to the same market pressures of other mainstream entertainment. Fortunately, as with music and movies, small independent developers still exist to cater to the more discriminating consumers. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |

yup, imagine if game developers gave a rat's a*s about what the consumers want, they might actually be more profitable, shudder the thought.... |
