A short and sombre message on the Earth & Beyond official site announces that EA has decided to close E&B come September:
Earth & Beyond Says Goodbye

Starting September 22, 2004, Earth & Beyond will no longer be in service. After an amazing two years of galactic adventure, Electronic Arts has made the decision to close Earth & Beyond in order to focus resources on future games.

Please check your email associated with your Earth & Beyond game account for updates and more information on what this closure means to you. We hope you've enjoyed the game as much as we have and that we'll see you again in another great EA game!

For more information, please visit www.enb.com.

Thank you,
The Earth & Beyond Team
There's also a Sunset FAQ with all sorts of pertinent information including these bits:
Q: Are you going to patch more content?
A: No, the E&B content team is moving on to other projects. However, the server team will work to make sure E&B runs smoothly until its end date.

Q: Are you going to fix bugs?
A: We will address technical bugs that affect the operation of the game. We will not fix any bugs pertaining to content.

Q: What happened to the devs?
A: The E&B team is being moved onto several other projects, most notably Ultima X: Odyssey. Visit http://www.uxo.ea.com/ for more information.
|

And another one bites the dust...
Bad news for the E&B crowd but a little bright note is that the E&B team will be transferred to UXO.
This is uplifting news to me. At least EA is planning on going through with UXO!
Having said that, I feel for the players of E&B Must be aweful to see a game you enjoy being cancelled... |

Lack of high end content, lack of pvp. That's the main reasons I didn't play it after beta. Playing eve now (after initially not liking it in beta, but rejoining about a month ago.. much much improved), would recommend it to the remaining 50 or so players that still load up E&B .. you can get a 10 day trial off of fileplanet.
Consolidation will be good for the industry.... |

Once EnB is gone, I think it has pretty much gotten to the point that EA Doesn't make any games to my liking |
