"Ah, but something disturbed the delicate structure of magic and we were trapped within our own barrier." --Xardas

I'm guessing that "something" was KRUSHAK, The Sleeper.

After beating the brains out of this game for the third time in a row, I think I'm pretty familiar with the plot, and I can tell you what I've pieced together.

Ur-Shak the Orc Shaman explains that his people discovered The Sleeper and sought to gain his aid in defeating the enemy (King Rhotbar). They built a temple for The Sleeper, but he cursed them all and made them undead guardians. Eventually the orcs became terrified and sealed the temple, and started making sacrifices to appease the demon. Ur-Shak opposed these sacrifices, and that's why he was banished from his home.

Meanwhile, the wars still raged and King Rhotbar took multiple ass-beatings. Eventually, after several more ass-beatings, he decreed that all convicts were to work in the mines of Khorinis--this is where the magic ore is, and weapons forged from this ore are superior. Also, Khorinis is the only place where magic ore can be found. I often wondered, "Why doesn't he just get his ore somewhere else?" Well, he could, but it wouldn't be magic ore--blue ore, as we all know that iron ore is red.

Well, anyway, as far as I can tell, when the twelve magicians--six fire mages and six water mages--invoked the barrier, the presense of The Sleeper amplified the mystical energies and maintained the prison. Also, it is apparent that the five focus stones used played an even bigger role than anybody realized. Think about it. Nyras went psycho when he got his hands on one of the five focus stones. Y'Berion used it in a ritual to contact The Sleeper, and it killed him. Five focus stones. Five hearts of five undead Orc Shamans. And consider this--the five pedestals--where they not of Orcish craftsmanship? I recall at least three that had stone statues of Orc Warriors on either side. Perhaps these stones were originally used by the Orcs to bring The Sleeper into the world! The twelve magicians used them to erect the barrier, but they knew nothing of The Sleeper.

You can draw your own conclusions, but it makes sense to me. When The Sleeper was banished into his own dimension, the barrier collapsed.

No, not all of it. There are many thoughts in his post that are assumptions (good ones might I add). But a good portion of that is NOT mentioned during the game.
