Download the Gothic FAQ here. It has instructions on using the cheats.

Your character should kneel down and open the chest by using it (ctrl + the up arrow key), unless the chest is locked. Then you must pick the lock.

sometimes you don't have the stuff in the chests hilighted, even if you think you do. make sure there's a whitish glow behind the item you want, then press crt+the right arrow key to transfer it into your inventory.

Please check your keyboard mapping in the game menu Settings / Keyboard.
Select 'Default Setting' to load the default mapping.
It should work as described in the FAQ.

I have to admit, this got me the first time I tried chests. I focused on the chest by using the Use key and the Forward key (which have been detailed above). Of course, the chest wouldn't open, I tried another and couldn't open that either. I thought it was a bug at first or that some chests were decorative. That is though until I focused on one chest (Use and Forward until your guy is kneeling in front of it) and then pressed Use and Left, I heard *clukt!*, of course, I was a little confused. Then I tried Use and Right 'The Lockpick broke'. It all made sense then.
So to note, you must focus on a Chest (Forward and Use) before you try and pick the lock. Does that help? |
