With Apologies to WS : "To MOD or Not to MOD?" |
|
This came up in another topic I posted... And stirred some response... So I thought I'd try and give it some lead time...
Hope no one minds the rehash...
In another topic I mentioned I was avoiding ANY Mod the first time thru... This got coined as "Vanilla" ( heh, how did she know I like Vanilla )... I got some good responses as to WHY I should MOD, and some others supported the concept of not MODding... And I thought it might be of some use to those just starting out... If we chatted about the Pros and Cons...
Personally I am a pureist... I want to play the game thru as originally designed... Sure I am finding things that I want fixxed... And I am cursing the CliffRacers, and wondering why a single sheet of paper / note weighs 1.0 units ( what is the unit anyway? )... And I exit my game and go to the editor and I "FIX" things I don't like... And THEN, I don't Apply the "FIX", I'll apply it the second time thru... Yeah it's silly that everyone else in Morrowind can own a house, but I cannot... I figure it's something the designers intended... and add my own "narative" plot point that EX-CONs cannot own property... and move on...
Don't get me wrong... Next time around, perhaps the third, I'll have a Trophy Room in my damn house... But you best believe I'll be BUYing the house... from some MOD vendor... I'll be exploring the world with a Pack Guar, I have no doubt... Purchased from a MOD vendor... it's very important to me that the "overall" gameworld not change...
Now, on the otherhand... I know there are peeps out there ready to MOD the heck outta things... And three cheers to them... And I may join them the fourth or fifth time around... Yes, I know playing thru the same game 4 or 5 times sounds silly... but damn it, I AM STILL PLAYING DAGGERFALL... not the main quest... but a damn good dungeoun romp every so often ( and damn it those were dungeouns ) is still more fun than a day with a bad game...
In the time I spend finishing my "Vanilla" game 100s of MODs will come out... maybe even several from the fine folks at Bethesda... And I'll be very picky aout what gets applied for the second run... Any patches that come out will be applied, as long as my SAVE GAMEs aren't affected... but other than that, like I said I am a purist...
Perhaps an open debate, NOT an arguement, would help those considering buying the game, commit... and those who have just bought the game decide what MODs to apply and when to apply them...
And last but not least... ( hehee ) Anyone ( OldSchoolers ) want to start work on a total conversion of Ultima Seven??? ( heh, dont reply in this post ) _________________ ======================

I hate mods. Just a way for people to "play god" Cliff racers? They can be killed easy. Pieces of paper that weigh 1? Cmon who cares. Can't sell that uber item for 60k? Just mod the vendor. It's really pathetic, especially since the main complaint is that the game is too easy. I would welcome an official "difficulty mod" from the original publisher of the game, and of course any official patch. I would never play the game according to the rules made by some "kid on the streets" who had nothing to do with creating the game. |

The way I see it, we all bought the game with the same goal in mind (well, most of us at least). To have fun.
I see the "to mod or not to mod" discussion the same way as religion. Some people believe that god(s) exist(s) and some belive god(s) don't. We all believe something to satisfy our needs. We settle at a level that is the most comfortable to us. We debate this level with others hoping to either reaffirm our belief making us feel even more comfortable with it or we become convinced that some other thing would make us more comfortable and assume that position then.
Some people get their thrills from running around in God mode. Some people are gluttons for punishment and get their thrills when they solve a problem or accomplish a task against all odds. It takes all kinds. One side can be called inferiority complex ridden egomaniacs, while the other side is anal retentive fanatical purists. Of course, there is a whole spectrum of people in between and this is where most of us fit.
Personally, I don't like the god like power. I don't like giving myself unlimited credits or items. I don't like exploiting bugs, but I also don't like being hindered by them either. Ultimately, I know I would use a mod if I knew it would enhance the quality of my gaming experience and would increase the fun I have with the game.
Developers may have had a good idea of what they were doing and what they wanted to achieve, but they are only human. And they also have ideas that I may disagree with on a fundamental basis. They also have physical restrictions imposed upon them, like the technological limits of todays gaming industry. And they also have meta-restrictions imposed upon them, like ratings (ergo the most stripped down person is still wearing some sort of unidentifiable bear skin underwear). There is nothing wrong with tailoring the game, in my humble opinion, to fit one's vision of a perfect game. _________________ (@) |
