Bloom effect (no Legolas jokes please) in gaming?

Anybody bought the PC Gamer US 10th anniversary issue? The screenshots for Guild Wars were, umm how should i say, fuzzy ? Is this a new gaming fad like lens flare and rag doll physics (DXIW has both if i'm not wrong...)? I hope it doesn't increase the system req too much, I'm planning to get the game when it comes out.

Yes, I'm sure this will be the new game "thing." And sure, it looks nice, but it's gonna get old after awhile. I just hope it doesn't turn out like the flaming barrels did.
