For battle mage is medium armor best option - at least from roleplaing point of view.

From a roleplaying perspective, battlemages wear heavy armor because it provides the most protection. That's the entire concept of a battlemage, a mage that can stand in the middle of a battle and still do his thing. They wield the heaviest weapons (axes), have the heaviest armor and cast the most destructive spells. Everything about them spells out mass destruction.

However, from a roleplay point of view, one must ask why (at least traditionally viewed) is it that a mage does not wear heavy armor (and in many cases no armor at all)? The reason is generally that armor drops the mage's ability to concentrate his/her magical energies and cast spells efficiently (the same reason a thief doesn't wear armor - it reduces the primary abilities of the character). So, a battle mage wouldn't really wear any armor (certainly not when casting spells).

LMAO!

I just read through this whole post, got curious, fired up the CS, went to armor tab, pressed Rating to sort by highest to lowest armor rating. I opened the top entry to see what it was and, low and behold... It's a MEDIUM piece of armor.

Interesting stats though:
Name: Ebony Mail (medium)
Weight: 20.0
Health: 3000
AR: 100
Value: 120000
Enchantment: 600
- watchful spirit (constant effect)
- Resist Fire 75
- Shield 50
- Resist Magica 20

Pretty good reason to max your Medium Armor skill. Unfortunately, CS says there are no instances of it in the game. Perhaps some NPC conjures it for you, but it is not present in the game as is.

Other items in the 100 AR category:
Name: Dragonbone cuirass (heavy)
Weight: 50.00
Health: 3000
AR: 100
Value: 180000
Enchantment: 1500
- dragon aura (constant effect)
- Resist Fire 100

Name: Lord's Mail (heavy)
Weight: 30.00
Health: 3000
AR: 100
Value: 190000
Enchantment: 600
- dragon aura (cast when use)
- Cure Poison on self
- Resist Magicka 20-30 on self for 30s

The fourth is a tower shield.

Beyond that, Orcish medium is way down the list. It is listed with 32AR. Armors better than it:
- Dreugh (heavy) at 40
- Indoril (heavy) at 45
- Glass (light) at 50
- Ebony (heavy) at 60
- Daedric (heavy) at 80
- Number of heavy and light unique and bound items in range 50-90

So yes, medium armor is definately under represented.

As far as enchantments go, cephalopod light helmets are one of the best items to enchant. Bonemold medium armor is good for enchantments, but trully sux with AR (17). I forgot to check its weight to see if it would make a good light mage's armor, but considering it's medium, it implies it's heavier than the heaviest light.

Because, as any intelligent roleplayer would gather from how a mage "works", he would realize that a mage spends all his time in study. Learning the fine arts of magic, not standing outback with a trainer learning to swing a sword and move around in heavy armor.

No, the battlemage wears the heavy armor because he has sacrificed part of his magical training to learn how to move under the constraints of heavy armor. It's a very simple concept. If you look at the normal mage in MW you'll notice he doesn't have heavy armor as a major/minor skill, because he sacrificed that talent to further advance his own skill within other schools of magic.

Haven't you read any of the books within the game? There are some that talk about the great battlemages of the Emperor, and how just a few of them can destroy small armies with long range fireballs, and then the ability to go toe to toe with soldiers in combat.

There are a few peices of Heavy that have a higher multiplier than 2 to 1, like Fists of Randagulf gauntlets, Helm of Clavicus Vile, Dragonbone Cuirass.

With my level 36 warrior at 100 Heavy Armour skill, all the armour mentioned above, and the rest Daedric, my AR is 263. That armour is very durable, but is also very expensive to fix. After raiding a few shrines and ruins, it is not unlikely to incur 700 drakes worth of damage, so make sure to have Armourer skill, much cheaper. I can take a steady beating from 3 NPCs(the 3 on the dock in Ebonheart in this case) for a good 4 minutes before I am in danger of dying.

Here's a link to a pic of my AR
