The Journeyman Project Trilogy are three superb adventure games (the second one is one of the best ever adventures) but they have ABSOLUTELY no RPG elements whatsoever. Being able to impersonate people in the third game I don't consider an RPG element.

HOWEVER -- they are truly wonderful games. PLAY THEM.

Best two shoot'em up RPGs, EASILY: System Shock 2 and Deus Ex. No question.

Best game that FEELS sort of like an RPG even though it's absolutely not one: The Thief games (in my opinion). There is so much freedom in completing the mission objectives, it reminds me of RPG-land.

I am playing Mafia at the moment - this game rocks

it is a hot mix between Max Payne, Test Drive and Deus Ex

Setting: Mafia/Crime 1933-1938

no rpg, but fun

~Boy did I add depth to this conversation ? ~

We could start a discussion about the overexposure of violence in computer games, or an analytic debate "What was the best car in the 1930's" from a technical point of view

Hehe, I vote in favor! Letīs do some serious topic-murder!
Wait... This is outside of the NFG, right? Better behave.
No, on second thoughts, letīs not. Letīs stay on topic, discussing... whatever it was we were discussing. Er.. Mafia, right? Or was it Max Payne? Great games both of them! Great games indeed... hrm.. yeah...

Mafia is a very great game. Replayability is somewhat limited though...

Well, name a game that isnīt linear. Every game is linear. Yes, even Gothic. And GTA3. And especially Max Payne. Every (singleplayer) game is linear, just because of the simple fact that it has to be. Every game with a storyline has to be linear, otherwise it wouldnīt work out. "Freedom of do stuff in random order" is not the same thing as "Non-linear". In my opinion, of course.
Edited to correct some spelling...

I agree. And I think that too much non-linearity means frustration, at least for me.

I agree with you, Danicek. When thereīs no goal or nothing that needs to be done, I tend to loose interest. As a player (game-player, that is) I must have some directions. May they be loose and vague, but at least a hint of what to do next. I tried to play Morrowind and staying away from the main-story the second time I played it, just doing small tasks and exploring, but pretty quick I lost interest, and went mod-searching on the net instead.

Ohhh My God what a frustrating thing do you know what I mean with Too Linear. Repeat with me Too linear.
Too Linear = You have to do what the game want you to do you are nothing to change a little bit of the story. Ok Pinnen Stay Kool

How many times do I have to repeat?

Sometimes I want to play absolutely linear games. That is when I do not want to think a lot, because I need to think a lot in all other parts of my life.
Sometimes I want to play partly non-linear game.
But I do not want to play non-linear games, game with no end :].
