Remember all the trouble I had with my machine?
Remmeber the freezes and lockups every five minutes? How I changed my RAM chips? My processor? My sound card? My cooling fans?Every single driver? How I assumed that my board was broken and got myself a new one (which replicated the same errors, by the way)? How I tested the new/old/combined hardware night after night by loading a Gothic save of the OC castle yard and just let the game run without intervening (which resulted in me developing a crush on Scorpio but little else  )? How I finally clocked down my 1700 Athlon to 1600 to circumvent the trouble?
Sigh. Then let me tell you, I finally solved the problem. Soved, not circumvented.
I installed the chipset drivers.
Yes, I actually forgot to install the board's chipset drivers (for the old and new mainboard, mind you). I coincidentally noticed this today.
So please, kick me, for I deserve the punishment. And heed my advice - make sure that your chipset drivers are installed.

Perhaps I'm not so stupid after all. I just had the same dear old lockup problem just a few minutes ago.
So it'll be back to 1600 for me until I have another idea.
Sigh. Jaz out.

If you haven't already, you might want to try a new powersupply as well. My brother and I have both had strange and irregular lockups, reboots, etc. from what was apparently an "almost" dead but not quite powersupply.

Hope you get it fixed soon Jaz. Game crashes suck. I guess I'm lucky, the only problems I've ran into are minor crashes every once in a while.
I got:
Pentium III 600 Mhz
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 32MB card
Sound Blaster Live! Value
386 MB of RAM
And the game plays beautifully. Luck of the draw I guess. |

Ah, it's not just game crashes. The machine crashes at about every action it performs. I was able to finish Gothic the second and third time around without a single crash by clocking the machine down, but I just don't see the sense of buying a 1700 processor to run it on 1600.

Ugh... that sucks. Lucky for me if anything truely bad happens to my PC, the company I got it from will fix it for free and have it back to me in 24 hours. I love life time warrenties.  |

Jaz, on the positive side your warranty with the company you got your machine from must be pretty solid .
I can see the conversation now. Jaz: "Hi, is my computer working yet?" "No, I'll get to it when I get time." "Oh, no problem, but don't bother to come home until it is working."

Are you certain your motherboard can properly handle 1700? You say clocking the system down helps... that seems to indicate a basic incompatibility with your processor running at a certain speed.
Have you checked for a motherboard bios flash update? Perhaps there was a problem, but it's been tracked down.

I agree... the power source may be the problem as well. But I'd check for bios updates for the motherboard first.
Unless you have a spare power supply hanging around. |

The motherboard OUGHT to be able to handle a 1700 Athlon, at least that is what the producers claim. Bios updates didn't fix the problem so far. Next thing I'll try will be exchanging my board with that of the server... which is older, but it's the only other mainboard available to me right now.
Oh, and about the power source thing... of course I have a few spares . You ought to see our living room, computer parts wherever you look, just like in the workshop downstairs...
But I, too, suspect the board to be the culprit. |
