Well, I never said Morrowind has superior gameplay. But freedom in an RPG is always a plus for me, and for many gamers. Maybe non-linearity is just not your cup of tea Jung
I like non-linearity, but I just don't think the things you can do when you aren't following the plot are very rewarding in MW. The economics, environment, theft/reputation, game mechanics, and NPCs are too rudimentary to really enable role playing. MW is not a bad game, and it's given me more hours than most, but I just wish it was in development for another year to take it from good to great. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |

Perhaps you're right. Still, as there aren't too many good open ended RPGs out there, I think MW more than fits the bill. I myself am not too drawn by any quests whatsoever, I like to make my own, and MW lets me do that to a certain degree. I like sometimes to just load up my Alchemist character and go out looking for flowers and other ingredients. I am awarded a certain level of freedom that appeals to me. I know some don't agree, just ask Gig and I'm sure she'll tell you she was disapointed by MW too. But as I said already, those that liked Daggerfal in general like MW as well. _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=

Arx is very linear. But you'll never notice that, really. They are different games, both have something special, though. _________________ Rendelius

Yep, Ekim, I really agree with you. Morrowind lets you "aimlessly wander about", just doing something or nothing. I like that, too, and this is what draws me into the game nearly every day since it has been released... _________________ Rendelius

I loaded up the CodeCreatures and 3DMark(Game 4) benchmarks last night and couldn't help but think about the kind of game that I would like to play with these engines. If you don't known, both of these DX8 benchmarks feature realistic grass, trees and insects that sway in the wind and spectacular water effects that make you want to dive in and swim with the fish you can see schooling below. As the demos play, I felt like this is the kind of computer world that I would like to spend time in.
I would love to have a kind of world simulator where I could truly RP many kinds of characters, not just a warrior of some type. With the grass effects, realistic hunting as a way to get food/hides would seem possible. With the water effects, fishing would also be a option. With the sneak/AI featured in the "Thief" games, playing a crook would be thrilling. Then, after collecting whatever you decide to aquire, you could set up shop on the side of the road and NPC's would stop and buy...or perhaps rob you. NPC's with enough AI to have their own agenda and to surprise you would make the world an interesting place. Between Gothic, Thief and Morrowind, we got a taste of what is possible.
I guess this is just wishfull thinking on my part. It seems to me that the technology exists in various places to make a game like this, but I doubt a single game maker has the resources and know-how to make it. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |
