Thief: Deadly Shadows - Interview @ RPG Vault

RPG Vault has the second part of an interview with Warren Spector, ION Storm's somewhat controversial director:
Jonric: The announcement of third-person perspective was quite a surprise. What led you to consider and to decide on adding it? In what ways and to what degree does it affect or change the gameplay?

Warren Spector: Man, was I dead set against third-person. Personally, I've always been a first-person guy. And I could hear the screams of anguish from the Thief fan community at the merest mention of third-person. But the decision became trivially simple when some team members started with our first-person "body awareness" system, hacked in a third-person mode by simply repositioning the camera, and then forced me to sit down and play it. Even in its earliest, most hacked form, third-person was intensely cool.

Pfah. So Thief fans shouldn't blame dear Warren, they should blame those unnamed team members. But there's something interesting: Warren KNOWS he angers the Thief fan community with this design decision - so WHY does he do it? Because HE liked it. Because HE doesn't feel like that BEING Garrett is something totally different than PLAYING Garrett.
