So then, "fame points" would actually open up story lines for you rather than do anything to the character. That could be interesting. It might be tough to program the branching. Balancing so that you could be certain of finishing the game might be a challenge, too. That might be the best idea I've heard to make a skill system do-able. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

I am afraid it is not original ... Darklands used something like that ... and your fame was regional. Some quests effected only your fame in a given city, while others might give you a large boost locally, and a small one further away. In any case once your fame in a given city got to certain point it would spread to near by cities (though much reduced, "All Bremen knows that the hero of Berlin isn't as good as the hero of Bremen").
I had not actually thought of the implications on programing the story, but I can see where a story line *should* falter if the PC has not distinguished him/her self. There is always the "In the right place at the right (wrong?) time" like Bilbo. But that is not as satisfying a gaming experience as becoming the "Dreaded Assassin Who Never Fails" a whispered about person whose existance is known only to a select few...or the more obvious "Slayer of All Evil" hero of many towns...and because of that fame being asked to save/ruin the world/country/city. |
