Console

I've been playing around with the console... running a few tests. I'm simply trying to add an item to the world or in my inventory. After many improper syntax errors I finaly came up with one that seemed to take. I typed:

additem misc_inkwell 1

then pressed enter. Nothing happens. Nothing in my inventory and nothing in the game world. Please help? What am I doing wrong or missing?

the syntax is:

player->additem
