I was reading the Faq and I saw an interesting note about getting free guards armor and still becoming a Fire Mage.
This is for people who may have skipped over this or have not read the Faq:

1 Firstly, you talk to Thorus and tell him you are interested in magic.
2 Then go to Milten and tell him you want to join the Mages, take the test from Carristo but don't follow him up the stairs.
3 Now become a guard.
4 Train in X-bow or whatever and get your armor.
5 Now go up to Carristo and become a Fire Mage with Guard's Armor.

Question,
Stone is selling even BETTER guard armor, but he says it's only for the upper class guards. Can I go about doing quests as a guard in order to get such armor, and then do Callisto's thing later to be a fire magician?

I mean, is there a certain time limit that I have before I have to follow Callisto up for the test?

You can't get the heavy guard's armor, not matter what you do. That is unless you cheat useing marvin. But seems to be the number one complaint of Gothic fans; as cool looking as the Heavy Guard's armor is, you just can't get it.

Yea, but is there a time limit before I have to go to Callisto?

Can I get the next armor up somehow?
I just don't wanna go to Callisto with the first lame guard's armor.

You should be able to get the middle level armor, then become a Mage.

How? get level 12?
So I can do anything in a guard quest, get as many levels as I want to, then Callisto will always be up there waiting for me?

Gomez has them all killed. Further, the type of armor you get is based on quests, not levels. (I think.)
