SWG: Weekly Wednesday Beta Update

The second-to-last weekly Wednesday beta update has been posted to the official 'Star Wars: Galaxies' forums.

Here's a bit:
For those of you who missed the announcement, we will be in stores in one week and one day. Notice how I’m not saying we will be “done” in that time. The game, while competitive, stable and fun will continue to grow after we release. In fact, not only is the entire team staying on to work on adding to the game, we’ll also be hiring some more people. We’ve got our announced post-released features to work on, on-going content and also have some other things that we aren’t discussing yet (we’re finally learning not to make announcements until we’re ready ). Additionally there will be more bugs to fix and balance to be done. Yes I said bugs to fix, we’re knocking out all the important ones this week, but to be completely honest no game ships bug-free. Massively Multiplayer Games are generally worse because we are always adding new stuff (yey!), but with 10 new things you usually get 1 broken thing (boo!).

Perhaps I'm being unrealistic but some of these comments make me think a little more on Ekim's recent editorial on reviewing MMORPGs. Yes, all games ship with bugs but I'd like to think they *attempt* to clear the major ones instead of announcing the game and assuming they can clear those bugs in the week before release.

I wish them luck and hope it goes well. If the reviews are good I might consider playing myself. But, if (and I'm only saying "if") the reviews have scores that reflect some major bugs, don't they deserve that? If they can squash the major bugs in one week surely they could have waited one week to see the result before announcing? Ekim asked if it was fair for a game that evolves to be saddled with a poor review early in it's life - I'm still convinced the answer is "Yes!".

Bravo Dhruin. English professors who happen to be gamers must be pulling their hair out.

Every Game Developer on Earth: "It's a MMOG, bugs are to be expected"
Steve Johnson, Professor of English at Cornell: "What?!" "Fallacy !" "You make an asumption based on a non truth!" "Fallacy @#&%^!"
