MMORPGDot Feature: What I learned in Thailand

Our new editor Josh 'Moxie' Sprague tells of his days spent in Thailand and his view on why the online gaming culture in the East is so different from the West. Here's a snippet:
Before I even knew where Thailand was on a map, I read a story listed on Fark.com about the Thai government issuing a mandatory closing time for net cafés that offered online games. Apparently, the incident that inspired this "last call" on online gaming was the death of a young teen, who was said to have died denying all bodily needs while playing Lineage. The mysterious Orient became that much more mysterious as I tried to figure out how a person could be so manic about a game that he dismisses Maslow's entire hierarchy in his quest for a great sword or to see the character's level click up one more number. Six months later, an old friend and I set out to live in another country and decided on northern Thailand as I had connections there. It was here that the differences between Asian gamers and Western gamers became more apparent.
Read it all here.

Very good article...the differences between Easstern and Western philosophy on major issues - such as life and death values - are clearly still there today as in some few years back; of course, back in those days I wasn't discussing the finer points of MMORPG/RPG gaming and fighting - rather I was actually fighting to stay alive in a land where life was cheap, and death was easy *chuckles*

I should note that I wasn't in Thailand at that particular time either, but rather on a thirteen month "vacation" in Vietnam - courtesy of the U.S. Army:-)

When you jump into worldviews, it's really interesting how things start to affect things. The Thais are %90 Buddhist and I think that's why none are in a hurry as they have another 500 lifetimes at least before becoming a monk that achieves Nirvana. Here's the puzzler to me though:

Why do linear thinkers like open-ended gameplay and circular thinkers like linear gameplay?
