Naa, this should work fine. There's nothing inherent in most filesystems that dictates which install of an operating system it came from - you should just be able to mount the other filesystem and access it normally. It's likely you had two users with the same name but different user ids, thus the files weren't accessible. UNIX systems track ownership based on user id, not name - the names in a ls -l listing are resolved on the fly from the current operating system's passwd file.

Note that if the filesystem is encrypted and the key is only known by the first operating system, this is a different story...

This is why companies which take security seriously keep their servers (Windows/Unix/Linux/whatever) locked away in rooms no one can get into (sometimes even the admin himself has trouble getting in )

x86 machines are about the most insecure you can get - if someone has physical access to the machine. The hardware is tolerant and user-friendly, two terms that essentially imply "insecure". You *can* lock them down, but it's usually much more trouble than it's worth. Just buy a padlock for the computer room.

You know, that could work. I think I remember my professor mentioning one that he uses regularly for recovering clients' systems. I'll have to ask him which one he uses.

As well as a floppy-disk emergency distro, everyone should have a pet CD distro around. Aside from actually using them to install Linux, they are powerful partition editors, security bypasses/breakers, hardware diagnostics/identification systems, data cleansers, installation aides, etc.

So your saying that if I had two installs on a single machine, where one install had a User called Mike with an ID of 504 and the other install had a User called Mary with an ID of 504, they would be able to access each others files on the seperate partitions?

P.S. What is Pet CD distro (I presume you mean some kind of *nix OS)
