Beyond Divinity: Review @ C&VG

What appears to be the first <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/reviews/reviews_story.php?id=103107&page=1" target="_blank">review</a> of Larian's upcoming 'Beyond Divinity' can be found at C&VG. The article is clearly marked 'Divine Divinity' but it refers to Div Div in the past tense and quickly moves on to discuss Beyond Divinity. In addition, C&VG posted a review of Div Div in 2002 (written by none other than Rhianna Pratchett) with a score of 85%. BD is praised for interactivity but criticised for "old-skool" graphics and "messy" combat and the score is 71%:<blockquote><em>The fact is that of all the fantasy games out there, there are none that are as accessible as this series, while still offering such huge scope to explore the environment, the story and the characters themselves. The graphics are decidedly old-skool and the combat isn't nearly as tactical or as spectacular as the developer claims (I feel Larian should drop the Diablo-style combat entirely). However, with BioWare moving ever more mainstream, the Divinity series could well take over from where Baldur's Gate left off.</em></blockquote>

I think this review is a bit harsh. The score is decent but they really said some dumb things. Especially about Blizzard and Bioware being the end all be all of rpg designers. Sure, they sell a lot of units but they certainly aren't 'in-depth' rpgs. I'm not saying that BioWare is bad but they do seem to be going for more stream-lined gaming rather than interactive worlds.

I don't know how any self-respecting reviewer can call these graphics 'old-skool.' They aren't up to date but I, personally, like them.

Maybe not Blizzard and Bioware, but it is quite easy to use the Diablo and the Baldur's gate series as a way of specifying the gameplay of isometric cRPGs.

Divinity is basically Diablo style combat combined with BG style story telling.

Doesn't seem to harsh to me, but I'll wait for a few more reviews before buying the game. I already tried the demo, but it didn't impress me even though I liked DD. If it doesn't score too well, I'll use the money to buy Far Cry.
