MMORPGDot Feature: Ekim's Gamer View - Staying With the Game

This week, Ekim provides us with an excellent editorial concerning MMORPGs as he talks about what keeps players with MMORPGs, and why we sometimes just seem to be glued to a certain game.
Online gaming, especially when it’s an a RPG form, is supposed to be a long-term experience by design. And by “long-term” they mean months, even years rather than weeks. And yet some people out there complain about the lack of rewards once you get to the forever elusive “end-game” in these MMORPGs. The search for the hook that will keep gamers playing MMORPGs for a long time continues.

One way to go is by using XP modifiers. The furher ahead of the average player level you are the more your XP will be modified negatively, the player levels below the average will get a positive modifier.
This way a power gamer will still be able to stay ahead of the rest but he will pay in time invested and a new player who is starting late when the average player level is high, will get a big bonus to his XP so he will have a greater chance of catching up with the rest. The modifier would have to be applied on skills as well, else those with a positive modifier would be hindered by low skill levels (in a system where skills increase with use).
In short, an average level (35) player's modifier is 1, a power gamer's (45) modifier is 0.5 and a fresh character's (1) modifier is 10.
This system isn't perfect and can be (has to be) tweaked but I think it's a step in the right direction.

When this gets shot down in flames my defence will be that I don't feel very well today - must be something I ate yesterday
