| Overlocking a Geforce 3 without extra cooling? |
|
I am thinking about overclocking my Geforce 3 Ti 200 (Asus) but am not sure on how to proceed.
Do I absolutly NEED extra cooling or can I do without it if I not overclock that much?
At the moment I don't have any extra cooling fans or anything so how much could I overclock my vidcard right now you think?
Any help on this subject is welcome, thanks. |

It depends on what CPU are you using, if you have open or closed case, what cooling have your CPU and case...
But generaly it is not necessary to use fan to overlocke this card.
You alway can try it. If you PC will be less stable than before, you know that you reached your limits.
You must do small steps, if you will dot this, you are safe, because you will notice big instabillity long before you will damage your card.
There is ofcourse alway possibility that your card has some mistakes and that it will break when you will try it. If you can still return it and you will overlocke it and they will notice this, you will not be able to get new for old or get money back.
Visit some overolcking forum, they will inform you about best ratio between memory and core frequencies and how to do it exactly.

Well, I'm using a AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz with coolermaster fan, closed case with one fan in it.
I've read a bit on several forums and they all say that pushing a Geforce 3 Ti 200 to 200/450 settings is a very safe bet.
They also say that you could most likely clock it even higher without extra cooling devices but that those settings (200/450) are usually harmless.
What if I OC my card straight away to those numbers?
Would it blow up in my face you think?
Or is it better to take 10 MHz steps and see what happens each time?
Hmm, I think I know the answer to that one 
Boy oh boy, I'd like to overclock and get better results but to be honest I'm a bit affraid to actually DO it... |

You surely need to do small steps.
First one can be 20 Mhz, then make them smaller and smaller.
Note that you need to warm your pc to make yourself sure that new setting works. If your Windows starts without prob. it is not sure that everything is ok. Run 3D mark for one hour and you will se if everything is ok (or run MW for one our  ).

It is absolutely safe to overclock branded Ti200 to about 230/490.
The max should be 245/515 (rare chips).
Don't worry to overclock it too much, because the worst that can happen is that your PC will hang up or you'll see stip & snow artifacts in 3D apps.
Run 3D Mark after each 5-10MHz increase. And if you don't see any snow, the test passed and the comp is still working, you can apply those settings at every startup.
If your memory chips don't have heat sink, try to find a couple in local hardware store, or they can be ordered online.
As for me I've put a Celeron800 cooler on my Chaintech Ti200, and 2 small coolers on each memory heat sink. But as i've found out, that's absolutely not necessary. 5-7MHz plus and that's all you can get with such cooling system. The standard cooling allows 230/490 and that's a rock stable maximum with any cooling. |

To Danicek: the default settings for my card are: 175/400.
And thanks for replying, btw If decide to OC then I will surely use your advice and do it in small steps and run 3dmark after each increment.
Masta: Thx for your input! Would you have an idea of how much I would gain if I was to OC my Geforce 3 Ti 200 to a 200/450 setting? Must I think in 1 or 2 frames or in like 5 to 10 frames or something like that? |

Ok, I went ahead and did it! I overclocked my card to a 200/450 setting.
I did it in a couple of steps and run the 3dmark benchmark after each time to see how it did.
Everthing went just fine without any problems.
My 3dmark score went up from 5450 to 5708. That was kinda cool 
Nothing spectacular but still a nice little boost of about 250 points.
I do not dare to OC it any further so this is ok for now.

When I get Morrowind myself, and that's probably monday, I'll put the other good tips to use that I've read here on this forum.
(using the crack - turn off shadows and AA - turn res up to 1280x960)

Yes, antivirus scans all accessed files (ussually), so if you disable it, it will always help . |
