Hi fellas.....
Been playin' Gothic for a couple weeks now. Was recommended by my "Blade" buddy mersil.....he wasn't kidding. Great ...great job by the makers.
I've been visiting the site here off and on during game play and must say the I eventually found the FAQ done by you guys pretty informative. (You know how that goes....you don't want to read too far ahead ...so I just refer to it as I leave an area.) I'll admit that a couple of the puzzles in capter 5 would have been tough without it.....as well as finding out that I was missin' an important player in the "dark" castle. A couple "redos" got it right.
I'm just startin' chapter 6 and am playin' as a warrior. My strength is an incredible 295. Not quite sure how this happened ....the Hero sure does rock tho
Got plenty of dexterity and mastered all swords and bows. Got 45 on mana, too.
As I started to say above....I have played a couple of "sort of" RPG's before and really consider myself a newbie to the genra. This game _is_ very well done....not to mention engrossing.
Before this was Blade of Darkness ....for me the first anti-FPS game I've played and really enjoyed. While this title lacked a story line and was kind of linear in game play....their combat engine was quite good. As with Gothics' ..it too some getting used to.
What really made me want to post a thread here was a game moment I had that just knocked me out of my chair....I'd like to share it with you all.
I was hunting a bunch of Razors outside the 13th magicians house....down by the small pool. I usually hunt by moonlight but this day I decided to change tactics.....bein' that there where quite a few of these beasts.
I had my back to a hillside and was inchin' myself over to the right to try and draw one of the Razors out of the herd and down to me. As I inch further to the right I noticed a path that seemed to run back through the area I was in and behind my position. Realizing my tactical error of not checkin' my flank I thought I'd better check this out before I continue. Just as I had been thinkin' that ,I heard a snort and a growl....I can not explain all the thoughts that where goin' through my head as I turned.
There ,about 2 feet from me, was a Razor. He had snuck up behind me and was just standing there....like he was deciding which "cheek" to grab first. He bit me a few moments _after_ I'd turned to face him.
*Any other game would of had this AI on me in a flash and would of come off as a cheap shot.....the fact that the Razor did what he did was just too real.... waitin' till I turned before strikin'*
This just floored me and I have to say it was just plain COOL. Great job guys!
My whole family is pretty much taken with this game. The wife.....who is usually very uninterested in PC games of this type (sword play) but I find her on many occasions lookin' over my shoulder with Gothic. My sons are both playin' it too. One of them enjoyed the other game I mentioned earlier and was "turned off" by the controls of Gothic....until he started to play and give it a chance. Ya....he loves it now. Even my daughter has started to play. These are all teenagers.....I'm middle aged. This game has a very wide appeal guys.
Again....Super job.
Oh, and mersil...I know your here buddy...thx for the "tip".

I think the two of you should try to find the "You know you played too much Gothic..." thread. |

Your strength is at 295 you say? You're either a liar or a cheater. |

Hi Puppet, glad to see you enjoy such a fine game also,
This too was My very first Rpg. or say ( interacting/decision making game )
this is the Only game i seen so far in the Rpg Genre that actually speaks the words. Most all the rest are Like reading some Huge boring Novel.
i am on the Hunt for another Such a game.
( slim Pickings though )
guess i will be bouncing back-n-forth between Blade, Rune, Gothic , until something else is released.
the "next game scheduled" to be released i think should need a Close look (and Demo) is :
Arx Fatalis - march 2002 release
ohh . and hey anonymous , that wasnt nice calling my Bud a liar/cheater.
its possible that either he may be mistaken, or a bug , Or maybe he just somehow got a bad ass character 295 - strength WOW

I'm too old to lie....
Too dumb to mess with code....
Why cheat?....it is just a game
To top it off....Anonymous, your gonna love this
....after I found the rest of the goodies in chapter6 the strength topped out at 337 or somethin'. If ya tell me how I can take a sreen shot of the status window, I'd be more than happy to oblige. I am just as puzzled as you are....especially since I've only read here of guys getting 235 or so.
Hi mersil....this is a good game m8. I had read your post at the other stompin' ground and picked it up. That $40 was well spent. |

Dude...what the f*ck is up with you guys? First one liar then another.
STRENGTH MAXES OUT AT 100!!!!
It's possible to get slightly higher than that through the use of potions(If you save them until after you maxed out your strength)
but you can't get anywhere close to 200, much less 295 or 270 so stop with the bullsh*t. |

Maybe they spawned themselves those potions who give you +10 strenght and stuff.I'm now on 128 strenght, and i'm in chapter 6,but i don't think i'll get any stronger.Unless i buy me some +10 strenght ring or something. But i also beleve that those people who have almost 300 strenght are liers or cheaters. |

I just finished talking to the fire demon in Xardas' Tower and my Strength so far is 123. I have another amulet that can bump it up to 143, but I prefer for now to keep the armor enhancing amulet on for extra defense. I drank all strength/dex potions I could find, so unless I botched somewhere, I have no idea how to get Strength any further. You might have hit a bug in the code that affected your strength (at least this bug is a good bug...hate those that take away points:P). To triple you strength after spending all those training points maxxing out your Strength seems like a bug you found. Anything is possible in a game like Gothic, so I wouldn't be surprised that you performed some combo that triggered the increase in Strength. I even get a problem every now and then that appears that a critter is immune to my swings until I run away and come back. Not a good bug:-) |

Dont scream when you are obviously wrong...
Everyone with at least some experience with this game knows that you can use potions to pass beyond 100 in strength... I ended the game with 210 str myself.
Hang your head in shame...

First I want to say that I love the game,so don't get me wrong...
Imho it's not really a RPG,more of an adventure...since:
Quests are the same no matter how you play.
You can't really change your char and play good/evil.
Only one way to solve quests.
Anyway,it's one of three games within the RPG'ish neighbourhood that I like, the other two are Fallout and Fallout2.(which imho are true RPG's)
The next RPG I'm looking at is Morrowind...and of course Fallout3.(which's not in production yet)
Also I'm hoping to see a new release from PB,since Gothic was a very impressive start. |

hehehe....it's cool...I've been called much worse things in my life. Just so it's clear to some....this is not to brag....just to inform.
Frankly, I had forgotten about a 20ptAmulet and 10pt. ring which I took off for some other abilities at the end. This would in theory add another 30pts. to the already 337 in strength.
I too was at 147 before the 13th magician....
this happened someplace inside the temple. In the temple, I was takin' all the goodies as I went along and finally decided to check status after I found a chest on a ledge next to the minecrawler corridor. That is when I spotted the 295pts. I couldn't believe it either.
Whether or not this _really_ had anything to do with the Heros' _real_ abilities is not too clear. Some enemies still took some doin' to put down.....so it could just be a missprint in the status window. Either way.....it is there.
I did finish up yesterday.....(spoiler below)
---------------------------------------------
It would of been nice to at least go back to Xardas and get him to his feet....both he and the Hero having a small dialoge and then leaving the Temple together. The "movie" cutscene was fine....the "in-game" cutscenes between charaters are better. The latter is what _I_ would have liked to have seen between the Hero and Xardas. Some sort of closure with the character.
However, this is a trivial gripe considering the _many_ days of enjoyment this game provided me.

you obviously don't know how to play the game and "search" for potions and what not,
amulets, rings give you added bonuses, also the magnitude of potions throughout the world, and let's not talk about the potions in the mummies skulls in the sleepers temple, my oh my
get your facts straight man, I ended with 210 + can't remember but it was more than that |
