I personally always invest in at least level one lock picking. The save/load thing takes too much time for me.

I also feel hunting skills are good to have (at least at the start of the game).

I played all the way through as a mage. I didn't put any points on strength/dex, I just used rings and amulets. I carried a short bow for targets only, all ranged combat was magic. It seemed like Fireball and Storm of Fire had greater range and more accuracy than arrows. I put all my points on mana and 4 skill points on hunting, no weapon skills, no theiving or acrobatics. I could cast spells just about all day long without running out of mana. I finished the game, no problem at all. So actually, you don't need fighter skills at all unless you want them. Not having them certainly didn't make Gothic difficult.

personally, i looooooooove the Conan approach. lockpicking lvl 1, mastered 1h + 2h and crossbow, all the hunting skills, and acrobatics (which actually got in the way more than it helped me) was pretty much everything i needed. admitedly, towards the end of the game, i was forced to put points into mana. but, seeing as how i ran around with like 60 skill points most of the time, it didn't really matter.
anywho. the reason i'm submitting is cuz i wanna know the chest combinations . could ya by any chance e-mail em to me? or maybe post em and do the community a favor ? if not i understand

ya, you can find potions to increase your strength, mana and dex. in several places in the game.
HINT: I would check all OLD bodies I came across
Also, check all chests that are hard to reach, your bound to find some good things in there. GOOD LUCK!
