I knew it!

When we moved to Bermuda Mrs Lintra and I decided not bring that large dusty and rarely used machine called a TV with us. We figured that we did not use it enough to warrant taking up space ... and what a good decision that has been!

Instead we cook, talk, play cards with friends, go snorkeling or diving, you name it. Just THINK of the time you would get if you had no TV.

In addition, we are no longer subjected to subliminal advertising convicing us that we are not normal because we live with in our means, we do not have a new car the size of a boat, use Fab, or whatever is being advertised. Now it turns out that future baby Lintras (ya, yeah, I know scary thought) may benefit ...

Pre-amble over, and now to the main show:

Toddler TV Habits Tied to Attention Deficit
Mon Apr 5, 9:23 AM ET Add Top Stories - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Michael Conlon

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The more television children watch between the ages of 1 and 3, the greater their risk of having attention problems at age 7, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

They found that each hour of television that preschoolers watched per day increased the risk of attention problems such as attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, by almost 10 percent later on.

The study, published in the April issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, adds inattention to the list of harmful effects of excessive television viewing that also includes obesity and violent behavior.

Frederick Zimmerman of the University of Washington in Seattle, one of the authors, said it was impossible to say what a "safe" level of TV viewing would be for children between the ages of 1 and 3.

"Each hour has an additional risk," he said in an interview. "You might say there's no safe level since there's a small but increased risk" with each hour.

"Things are a trade-off. Some parents might want to take that risk. We didn't find a safe level in that sense."

The data from 2,500 children covered by the study found that they watched an average of 2.2 hours per day at age 1 and 3.6 hours per day at age 3. But some watched 12 hours or more.

The ages are significant because brain development continues through those years, the study said.

"This study suggests that there is a significant and important association between early exposure to television and subsequent attentional problems," said Dimitri Christakis, a physician at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle who headed the study.

"We know from national estimates that children watch an average of two to three hours of television a day in the 1- to 3-year-old age group, and that as many as 30 percent of all children have a television in their bedroom," he said.

"There is a tremendous and growing reliance on television for a variety of reasons. However parents should be advised to limit their young child's television viewing," Christakis said.

In the United States between 3 percent and 5 percent of children are diagnosed with attention deficit disorder, which is marked by reduced ability to concentrate, difficulty in organizing and impulsive behavior. The symptoms do not typically show up until children are older, around age 7.

STUDY LIMITED

The authors said the study had some limitations.

The television viewing data came from the parents and may not be completely accurate. Also, there is no way to know whether the children already had attention problems early on that attracted them to TV viewing, though symptoms don't appear that early, it said.

It was also possible the parents who allowed excessive TV viewing were themselves distracted and neglectful, creating a household that fostered attention problems in the children. Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder has a high heritability level, the study said.

And the study did not look at what kinds of programs the children watched.

"Despite these limitations our results have some important implications if replicated in future studies," it said. "First we (have) added inattention to the previously studied deleterious consequences of excessive television viewing ... (and) our findings suggested that preventive action can be taken."

Yup, I totally agree. When I was still home with my parents, I had a TV. We even had a 2nd TV, but that's another case of pathological matter.
When 6 months ago I moved out to another city (and country as a matter of fact) to university, I didn't have a TV set. 6 months later I still don't, and don't plan to, and I definately think it is one of the best things that have ever happened to me -> I have lots more time to do other stuff -> cook, go out more often, study more, play more on the PC, so on.

I think you made a good descision about the TV. there are only a few times a nice movie comes on. and if it does, after 15 minutes you get a pause.

but... finally you need new things, card games will start to bore. you don't have any topics left to talk about... then a TV may be handy.

Oh no! That is when it starts to get interesting!! What do you do when the person you are married to and yourself run out of things to do together?

a - ignore each other and plug your brains into the boob tube
b - get inventive

Hmmm, which sounds better to you?

I only watch a few specific shows so no TV wouldn't be a disaster (Mrs dte might disagree, though), but we'd miss out on many Mr/Mrs bonding opportunities without the chance to order a pizza and watch the Wings games and Cowboys games together.

TV, scmeeeveee.... it's the internet that has fostered my own growing sense of ADD. I can't be on my computer without doing SOMETHING... browsing five or six forums at once, a massive music list, a few anime music videos, Tetris...

It was a total slap in the face to play X2 and remember that once upon a time I had an attention span and that waiting 60 seconds in a game is nothing compared to the 6 minute load times per random encounter I got when playing Curse of the Azure Bonds on my Zenith 8088.

Oh, and while on the computer running a dozen things I have my TV on, as it's within peripheral vision range (for a reason). Mostly on Discovery channel or CNN or MuchMusic.... but it's merely noise.

As for TV and significant others... absolutely wonderful. Attention is diverted but not enough to detract from the others presence. A good TV show promotes discussion during commericals and afterwards. A bad one provides a good laugh. CSI and ER are the only two shows I try not to miss (Enterprise used to be on that list but I'm pretty much always busy Wed and Sun and have missed most of this season) and two of three Law and Orders aren't bad. Friday night is Anime night for my friends and I... we all get together at my place and veg out in front of the two to three hours of anime on YTV (Dragonball GT, MTV's Spider-Man, Samurai Jack, one hour of Inuyasha).

If it weren't for TV I never would have come out of my room and seen my parents for most of my teenage/young adult life. Our house naturally had 5 TVs... the one I bought for my bedroom, my brother's, my sister's, one in my parents bedroom, and one in the den. The only rule was that if more than one person was watching the same show they should consider doing so together and pretending they liked each other/were a family.

Then again maybe I'm evidence that the study is correct. I used to watch 6 hours of cartoons every Saturday morning (now I'm down to two if I'm home and don't feel like getting up until noon).

I think it's good to get out of the habit of watching TV all the time... but if I had no TV when a series of The Sopranos was showing, I think I'd get all unreasonable. Most TV is garbage, but there's some really worthwhile stuff on there occasionally. When a really good piece of art/entertainment comes along, I usually want to see it, whatever the medium.
