...because I kind of like him - yeah, I know, I'm not supposed to. But sometimes I'm a stubborn gal, and I'd rather NOT kill the guy at the New Mine. Gorn, however, has not the least restrictions about doing Jackal in.
Is there any method to maybe park Gorn someplace where he doesn't feel the need to enter the fight?

The further down I went into the Mine, the less likely that Gorn was to follow. I lost him on several trips into the mine. He usually got stuck around ladders. As far as Jackal goes, if you don't kill, you have to keep fighting him. 'cause he's always going to come after you. Just close your eyes and cram your sword up his arse

Kill em! And take his pretty Xbow (Jackal)

As for Gorn, you could tell him to wait for you at entrance...but then it would be *you* with the bullseye on your chest as you walk through free mine. Best bet is to let him lead, you knock everything down, he'll kill it. Nice combo

Well, I did kill Jackal in my first game (or rather, Gorn did), and of course I took this crossbow I lusted for since I first saw it...
(although that was unnecessary in so far as I already bought the same bow from Scorpio, so now I was equipped with two of the kind).

Well, since I'm on my second tour through the game now, I just wondered if I might spare the guy... but thanks to you all, I see now that it is hopeless .

As for Gorn... when I went through the mines with him, he dropped off the first ledge, killed all the crawlers down there and reappeared in front of the entrance.

I just wondered if I might park him somewhere outside BEFORE I go into the mine so he wouldn't massacre Jackal like he did the first time.

Nope. Jackals dogmeat anyway you slice it, whether he die by your hand or Gorn's.

Here's how I decide whether or not to kill someone in Gothic:

Someone raises a weapon against me, they're DEAD. I don't care how tight we were before that, how many favors we have done for each other, or how much swampweed we have smoked together. IT'S OVER.

If I start the fight, however, I will NOT kill the guy. After all, it wasn't his fault; I just wanted his ore/goods/whatever. You get into trouble for killing people after you, yourself, start the fight. It's just a friendly robbery, nothing personal.

Self-defense only, murder never. This philosophy has served me well throughout the game.

Hmmm... self defense... murder... usually, I'm a cautious player no matter what (or which game)... always the thief who even steals his best friends' ultimate possessions, but never harms anybody physically if it can be avoided. In my first tour of Gothic I mainly killed people in self defense, but at least two out of plain, simple helplessness (Mordrag because I somehow didn't find out how to make him leave - now I know, yes, okay-, and Lefty because I was too weak to harm him with my sword so I shot him).
I didn't kill Thorus, Fletcher and Bloodwyn even though the occasion offered itself.
Hmmm...
There were some unplanned casualties in the New Mine when several of those screaming, hysterical shadows ran into my bolts by accident, but I duly mourned them.

I HAVE to admit that I killed some of my buds out of curiosity, though, namely Cavalorn and Scorpio by turning into an Orcdog and chasing them across the map. They fled straight into the helpful arms of Fletcher and his band at the OC gate and were butchered there. But I reloaded an older save game to undo my terrible deed, of course !

It is so refreshing to see someone with some level of compassion playing the game .

Oh, you should have seen me in Planescape: Torment. I always ended up being Neutral Good in alignment...

haha, you wanna see butchery? The place where you get focus stone with Diego...
If you are a high enough level, the thiefs in the camp right next door wont even fight you, they straight out run in terror.
So imagine my suprise when I jumped right into the middle of them, they all take off and guess where they run...RIGHT to the OCs front door (mind you, this is chapter 4)
I've never seen so many swords raised up and planted into 1 man's chest in my life!!

Talk about bloodthirsty, I almost felt bad for them, just getting murdered like that LOL.
I quickly avenged their deaths, killed all the guards, looted every last one of them, Guard and Thief alike, and walked away whistling

See, I walked into this thieves camp, decided that they were no threat and left them alone.

That's the difference between us, Shrapnel... our respective alignments .

Jaz, you don't have to kill him. As a matter of fact there is a way. Buy a Charm spell from the Guru's. I used it on Bullit, I've used it on Gomez, etc.
You have to work fast because you can't get a spell off while being attacked. But I am sure he will not attack you again. He will say "Hello" again to you.

But I liked Max Killens answer best. Close your eyes and ...

Oha. Now that might be worth a try. Okay, I guess I'll give the charm thing a try...!

Wow, Jaz, your whole compassion thing makes me feel kinda bad! I'm definately not one of those minimum-force approach guys; after the two thugs of Quentin's shot at me (near the troll canyon with the focus) I killed them, then I killed Quentin and his whole camp without even knowing what they were for! But now I feel bad
