I bought Gothic last week, and have been up till the crack of dawn every day playing it. It's a great game -- but I have a few complants about it. There are some things it does that drives me up the wall with frustration... most of them have to do with combat.
Can anyone offer any advice of how to get around these things?
Problem One -- changing weapons in combat. It seems like every time the main character gets hit, he stops what he's doing and just stands there like a lump. So I cast my firestorm and start to draw my big freaking axe, but the first orc temple guard gets there and whacks me but good, and the rest of the combat involves me trying to draw my stupid axe before he hits me again.
Problem Two. Why the heck can you draw your weapon while moving forward, but not while moving backward? Urgh.
Problem Three: Automatic weapon/spell slots. Is there any way to change the keyboard settings so that you can assign unique keystrokes to specific weapons and spells? When playing with a mouse, the ONLY spells I can reach with my left hand are 4, 5, and 6. When I want to use any others I have to actually look down at the keyboard to find the 7-0 row. Urgh. And I'd really like to position the melee and bow keys a bit apart from each other so I don't accidentally draw one when I'm trying to draw the other... and it's really annoying when I'm trying to switch from a spell to a melee weapon and I hit the tilde button, switching to hand-to-hand combat instead.
Problem Four: Autotargeting. What's the best way to cope with the fact that in mass combat, the autotargeting thing never targets the one I want to hit? Is there a way to turn that thing off? It's annoying when the computer decides I really want to attack the wolf at the back of the pack with my axe, instead of the three that are actually causing damage. It's even more annoying when the computer decides I want to finish off an unconcious Templar Guard instead of attack the lesser demon who is tearing me a new one... especially since the coup de grace takes so long, the demon attacks me and interrupts the action, so the Templar Guard never actually dies!
*sighs*
Mind you, none of this changes the fact that Gothic is a great game, and if I were more used to console games I might be more comfortable with combat... but I'm not used to console games at all, and all these button combos are making my hands hurt.
So... do any of you have any advice on how to get around these problems, or is this something I'm just going to have to live with?

I'm 30! I'm too old to learn this Nintendo stuff!
Just kidding. Hey, once upon a time a played a mean game of "Jumpman..." heh.
Ok, so if I could only get one of those questions answered, my specific question would be: "What's the best way to change targets in combat?" I've noticed that simply turning doesn't really do the trick, because sometimes you have to turn past the target you want before the game switches over... and despite what the manual says, just hitting the turn keys (instead of using the mouse) doesn't seem to do a durned thing.

Problem 1: Use the spell scroll, run away and change the weapon when running. The animal/human will follow and when you have your other weapon ready. Stop running and turn fast. When the enemy almost reached you give a hit forward and then left-right-left-right-....... |

Maybe the combat section of JemyMīs FAQ gives you some more ideas. |

Holding the left or right key during the entire fall is way too boring. Pressing the left or right key just before hitting the ground is much more exciting because there are more risks involved. Try it.

The FAQ _is_ very useful, and helped me get an idea of what this whole "live action fighting thing" is all about. If it weren't for the explanation of how the left-right-left swing creates a zone where monsters can't just charge in and kill you. What it doesn't tell you is the trick for effectively changing targets in combat against multiple monsters.
The one that really gets me is combat with "NPCs" (like the Templars in the Orc Temple) mixed in with "Monsters" (Like the Temple Orc Guards)... I'll take out a Templar, but he won't be dead -- I need to coup de grace him for that... still, he's down, so I don't want to deal with him until I've taken out the orc guard. It seems like no matter how much I want to ignore him, however, the computer seems to feel that in a choice between a knocked out Templar and a living, slashing orc, the Templar should demand my attention.
Even backing away and moving up to re-engage the orc doesn't help much, because if the two are standing next to each other, the auto targeting seems to favor the unconcious and nonthreatening Templar. LOL *sigh*
Basically, they need to put in some kind of "common sense" algorithm in these fights.

They did, of course not in the way you want it. You simply donīt fight a strong templar and an orc guard at the same time in real life. |
