Single Character RPGs

I'm looking for a good RPG where you control only one character at a time (eg no parties) and you directly control that character (meaning you don't click where you want them to go, you just go there).

I realize this has sort of been covered in the gothic threads, but so far they have yielded little.

Hmmm... older RPGs like Lands of Lore 1-3 come to mind here.

Yes, games like Gothic... i don't know many, but Crusaders of Might and Magic is a bit like Gothic... buts its more a hack n' slash game than a RPG game...

Unless you go back to either 1st person shooters or back to the original 2 Ultimas, you are somewhat limited in your current choices. (exceptions being Crusaders etc).

Console platforms (NES, Sega, Super NES, PSX, etc) had lots of RPG's with that sort of movement style (Going way back here- Dragon Warrior, Soul Blade, etc)

You could of course try Ultima9 or alternatively try pulling all of your teeth out with a nice pair of pliers. Roughly equivalent experiences.

Gothic is a game set inside a prison camp the first chapter you have to earn you ore(money) by hunting, stealing or finding stuff. This guy is cool but full of errors if you can get past the errors it's great.

Battlespire

An old game called Battlespire is one character only and has a great story and gameplay to boot. It is fairly old and dated however. I also beleive that redguard by bethesda is a similar game.

Ultima underworld 1 and 2, Simply the best CRPG's ever made, and they are both single character games. Both games are from 1992-1994 so graphics are a bit dated for todays standard, but the gameplay is still unsurpassed. The new game to come very soon now "Arx" is supposed to be a game made in honour to those Ultima underworld games!

Ultima Underworld was also my top 1 game experience of all time.

As for other single player one character first person RPG's there is the obvious answer - Morrowind!

Also check out Outcast, it's more like an Adventure than RPG but very immersive nontheless (and the experience is somewhat similar to exploring in Morrowind). (Thief 1&2 and System Shock 1&2 are worth checking out as well.)

Waiting eagerly for Arx Fatalais, too.

in my opinion Daggerfall is a piece of s..t!
I never finished it. You simply couldn't... to many bugs...
however my top 3 list is:
1. Ultima Underworld 1 & Sytem Shock 1
2. Thief 1
3. Ultima Underworld 2 & System Shock 2

Hmmm, maybe games like Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot (but you can get into parties in those). Oh! What about Morrowind?

An old game that I really enjoyed:

Anvil of Dawn.

"Nobody fools (?) with a Clansman"

It was a really fun romp, with a surprise (at least unusual for it's time) ending.

Just to let you know, I finished Daggerfall. It's quite possible, and If you use the last patch and configure your system correctly, the bug count goes way down. It's a blast, I just wish Morrowind was more like Daggerfall but...
