Although ostensibly on MMORPGs, this <a href="http://www.raphkoster.com/gaming/moore.shtml" target="_blank">blog post</a> from Raph Koster (Sony Online - EverQuest 2, SWG, Ultima Online) on Moore's law and gaming makes some interesting points for games in general. The article looks at the increase in development costs for AAA games from around $200,000 12 yeas ago to $12M today, and makes this observation:<blockquote><em>So, let's think about what is happening here. The first thing to realize is that game play elements have not really become more complex. And by that I mean, the game play that was involved in the games in the early 90s, and the game play that’s involved today, midway through the following decade – they bear substantial similarities to one another. If you look at many of the top-selling genres, you can literally take a game from ten years ago, and set it down in front of someone, and they won’t need to read the manual. You can take one of the latest first-person shooters, send it back in time, and the players of those days would probably be able to understand hat to do, even though their computers probably wouldn’t be able to run the game. <br> <br>The thing about technology is that it has enabled a lot of really cool stuff, a lot of really cool visuals, in theory a lot of cool AI, and stuff, but the biggest effect it has had is to make game development more complicated and more significantly, more expensive. And that’s because the technology is primarily focused on presentation.</em></blockquote>

I'll tell you the answer to this:

It's all because of the selfish game industry.

It's very hard to get a startup company without any sponsorship from a giant.

Technology will keep becoming better until Virtual Reality (The one you see in movies) Will be available to people.

Game Design does not require powerful Computers. It's the Eye-Candy that requires powerful Computers.

Big Giants don't want to take the risk with Innovation because they want to target the mainstream (What most people play), but they don't realize that soon enough, Innovation will be the new mainstream.

It only takes alot of money to develop an MMORPG because people need jobs and Creating an MMORPG is a large endeavor which requires many people.
But Instead of focusing on Gameplay, they focus on Eye-Candy, because they know that the mainstream will love the gameplay, for its simplicity.

Soon enough, people will become bored of this.
