TES Fan finds folly w/Morrowind
   

I'm a raving fan of the Elder Scrolls games and as Daggerfall was my last taste I had really high expectations for Morrowind. For the most part I'd say that those expectations were very well met but there's things that didn't make the transition from Daggerfall to Morrowind that I really miss.

Remember how important time was in Daggerfall? Stores closed, city gates were shut (and could be climbed/levitated over) and NPCs were bumped to their nighttime locations. Different music played and nasty monsters generally came much closer to the cities if not right in the middle. You could hide in the closet of a merchant and wait until closing time then loot the whole place. Yes it was cheesy but it sure was fun. NPC's didn't "walk" to their night-time spots, they were teleported or hidden from view. I feel this same behavior could have been incorporated into Morrowind without huge drawbacks. Even if characters quite literally vanished when the clock struck 9:00pm I would have enjoyed this more than no time issues at all. We used to have time based quests that you WOULD fail if you farted around. This created a sense of urgency to many missions. I thought I had found this with the Barbarian/Healer Cloud Axe quest where she said she'd return his axe in three days. Well I took him to the shop and waited three days and she never showed! Ok, maybe this is by design but it was still a bit of a let-down to not see her in the Mage guild of Caldera the day she said she would be.

What happened to my valiant steed from Daggerfall? The addition of horses seems to me a very simple thing to implement but perhaps they were afraid the added speed would make Morrowind seem too small. I really don't know the logic behind their lack of inclusion. If the price of a horse was made prohibitively high that problem would have been solved. All indoor areas are "zoned" so manual dismounts could have been required to keep complications from arising there. You could have even forced riders to dismount when fighting and I would have been happy. Prevent spellcasting etc. Give me a horse drawn carraige if necessary. ANYTHING I can ride in-game is very cool. Teleport should be exactly as it is but why zip through travel on the silt-walkers and boats? Boat rides would have been exceedingly cool with the special effects and could have included passes by remote islands.

I'm really just wasting time at this point but I really miss the gameplay aspects of night and day. Sure we have gorgeous graphics that let us know what time it is but it just flat out doesn't matter in terms of gameplay as far as I've been able to tell. There just would have been something really cool about not losing these parts of Daggerfall.

Maybe they did it to try and appeal to a larger (impatient) crowd? Maybe technical limitations prevented such things? I'm sure these ideas crossed the minds of the developers/artists/producers etc.

Does anyone know what happened when these things were on the decision table?

I agree, this should be moved into General forum.

I had a message where I stated things that are stated here. I loved Gothic because the world was ALIVE! Totally alive, every NCP had their "life" If that aspect of Gothic would be combined with current Morrowind, the game would be a absolute hit. (like it now isnt !

I agree with your points about Daggerfall
   

I too miss the time(s) between day and night, open and closed stores. Add to that the really fine manor houses one could rip off at night - if not caught, of course. I also miss the horses but they are more than likely not there due to the smaller size of this game.
One more thing I miss from Daggerfall? The music - I really wish we could import the Daggerfall music into this wonderful game. I do love almost everything about this game, just would like a few hold overs from Daggerfall.

I don't understand why they didn't do night cycles. It would be more realistic if they could just move the chars to their beds and doesn't seem too hard.

But horses could be a problem. I doubt they could just make a horse mesh and let your char ride it. They would probly have to make a model for each race riding a horse. Then you would have to code getting on and off a horse. On top of that, how would a horse handle mountains and dungeons? Where could a horse go and not go. This seems intuitive, but coding all the different rules of a horse could get prety sticky. Too bad they couldn't have just added pack mules!

I think a day night cycle for the game is great, and I would be willing to put money down that there is already or soon will be a mod in the works to add that to the game.

As for a pack mule... go to the Mod Depot on this forum and follow the link to the pack Guar.

The only real problem I have with Morrowind, is the Character Creation process. I would much rather create my character BEFORE I started playing. Besides, Morrowind, IMHO, is far too limited on facial/hair selections.

If I could change one thing about Morrowind, Id remove the flyer crits that attack you anoyingly(let me have the airways. And make a 1/4 reduced netch, give it a paralyze effect like the scribs, and put a 1000 or so in the water. ( Terror lies beneath the waves!! I love Morrowund the way it is and hope many plugins come out over the next few years!

Having never played an RPG before, its the one thing that bugs me about MW. Way too static, day or night, everyone stands in the same spot, doing nothing.

Why don't shops ever close? To discourage stealing. Why is there a guard in just about every shop? To discourage stealing.

It seems like the devs gave this a lot of thought, and put this shortfall in the game intentionally. Just to thwart the looting that Sindau and others enjoyed so much in Daggerfall. Why? Probably to prevent characters from leveling up "artificially."

I think it sucks, BTW.

Well, I'm not all that far along, but apparently, the lack of sleep for everyone is supposedly explained by the main quest. NPC's talk about it all the time. Personally, I think it's a rather convenient/lame excuse for not programming day/night cycles in.

Regardless of there being no day/night cycles, the characters still don't do anything but stand there, or walk in some repeating pattern. After you help some guy along the road, he says he's gonna go right now and see his friend in such and such town, but instead of walking off, he just stands there like a dummy. It's only after you've been away for a while that he's no longer there. That's probably the most disappointing thing about an otherwise incredible game.
