Tired of Orcs Invading Your RPG? @ Evil Avatar

Following on from a reader's comment on invading orc cliches in RPGs, Jetherik from Evil Avatar has taken up the discussion. DivDiv and Gothic 2 serve as the original author's inspiration.

Personally I thought Gothic's use of Orcs as powerful and fearsome creatures rather than just cannon-fodder overcame the cliche to a large degree...thoughts?

Well, I read most of the threads there in the discusssion and I guess, as they are not here, I won't really be repeating them will I.

I agree that the Orcs, drow, goblins, and rats have become expected fair in most all RPG's set in that time period. But then again, that isn't all bad. People have come to expect certain things, and orcs fit into that mold. Just like a castle or tower would. They are now accepted as part of the era, and one can always expect to see them, even if you don't.

I agree Dhruin, Gothic did use them well. They were a formidable force in the first chapters, and not just cannon fodder.

So I believe it is safe to say they, with the goblins and rats, are here to stay, and I personally don't see any harm in it. Just normal aspects to the time period.
