I'm in ch 2, accepted into the old camp. Should I give my letter to the fire magicians now, or hold on to it for later in the game?

I would suggest going ahead and giving it to the mages. When you give it to Milten in the fire mage building, make sure that you don't give him any crap about your reward. You'll ge a better reward if you just let him have the letter when he asks for it.
