Ok, I want opinions.

I started playing the game with the default (Gothic 1) combat controls. I think I've got them down and I've figured out how to do a combo (side slash, overhand) and hopefully will learn more.

In one of the guides I read it recommended turning off the G1 controls as it makes fighting a lot easier.

So I tried it. I couldn't figure out how to do anything except overhand attack and parry.

So should I stick with the G1 controls, or should I switch? What's the secret to using the G2 attack control?

Which is preferred?

No idea. I've only tried the Gothic 1 control scheme as I've also used it in the prequel, obviously. You're learning to get the timing right while acquiring new moves, which I personally find very rewarding. Besides you have lots of freedom... If the Gothic 2 scheme is as simplified as in Diablo for instance, I would recommend against it, but as I said, I've never tried it myself.

Stick to the Gothic 1 controls if you like and understand them. The new controls indeed make the game (even) easier. They were a concession for the Diablo crowd.
Another advantage is that you have the biggest obstacle out of the way when you play the first Gothic.

I personally like Gothic 2 Controls better because they really make the game easier. But as Gorath already said you should stick to Gothic 1 controls if you like them and you are used to them.

G1 for all the same reasons as mentioned. And cause it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
