I've played M&M from the beginning and was very disappointed in there recent attempt at game play. I usually don't like the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"; but, in this case they had a winner with the previous games. I really looked forward to getting the ability to "fly" in the previous games. I really don't know what to say about their lastest offering. I played it for about 1.5 hours and I was bored to death. A couple of days ago I was doing some much needed file deleting on my computer and deleted the entire game. I haven't missed it, and quite truthfully, it's not worth the time involved to re-install it

I didn't start playing M&M (or RPGs) until MM7 came out, I have probably played that game all the way through four times, and I really liked 8 even though it wasn't improved any since 7. I've probably played 8 five times through, since getting the dragon early makes it so easy and allows you to beat it in half the time as 7. But this last one was terrible. I gave it a little longer than Max did, but than was only because I kept expecting it to get better, but it never did.

I guess that's my point. More than a simple MM9 bashing (which is probably deserved), I can't figure out how NWC made the design choices they did. How can a group of programmers that clearly knows how to do things with success decide to go in the directions they did? Who's the guy that stood up and said "Well, we've already got code to run 9 classes with 3 promos each. This time, let's throw all that code in the trash, start over, and run 2 classes with 3 promos each." Worse still, after some nut said that, evidently everyone in the room agreed. "OK, we've got an automap that people will be pointing to for the next several years as a guide for 'how to do it right'. Let's forget all that and start over" Nodding heads...

That's the part that makes me upset. While I'm disappointed that MM9 blew the big one, what brings tears to my eyes is that a group of people that did such a damn good job could make such poor decisions. I don't see where being understaffed and terribly rushed would cause such errors from the very beginning.

Most likely the answer is simply that someone wanted to do the project cheaper. That is, after all, generally the primary motivator for many if not most business decisions. I worked for a design engineering firm for 9 years - you might be surprised how many decisions are made on the basis of cost effectiveness (over the "best" way). This, I know, is not a really satisfying answer but most likely the correct one.

I'm a manufacturing engineer by trade. I understand the beancounter mentality painfully well. I'm still hung up about it, though. How would it be cheaper or more efficient to throw out lots of good code and start over? The only thing I can figure (which would explain a lot really) is that the old graphics engine and new one were so dramatically,incredibly, massively different that they had to throw out all the old code (even as a rough framework) and start over anyway. I know enough about programming to find that hard to believe, but not enough to say one way or the other for certain.
