I heard about it and I was threre several times. Several times I just headed through this country on my way somewhere else.
Seems like quite dangerous place for outlanders in nice cars. Several broken car-windows by not satisfied beggars is just example...
Probably it changed, I was there last time many - probably 10 - years ago. |

Psycho, how about the type of foods there, music, favorite sports. Here in the US you will find plenty of hot dogs, hambergers, french fries, and fat people. lol
While there is a push towards better eating habits right now, it doesn't seem to be working well. Here you will find basicly the same foods are popular no matter where you go. Different parts of the country have specialty items. Here in Missouri it is BBQ pork steaks for instance. And we are home to Busch Beer.
I would say baseball and football are the main sports, but there are plenty of people for every sport you can name. Hockey is one of my favorites for example. So now it is your turn to share. _________________ =Member of the Nonflamers Guild=

@DA UNDERTAKER: Be civil, or don't be here.
As for what I know about Romania: I, of course, know the Dracula myths and I can point it out on a map without any problems. I also know it was occupied by the USSR. I'm fairly certain that it isn't part of the EU yet, right? _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

hmm let me see: it's in Eastern Europe, capital is Bukarest and Ceausescu(sp?) ruled there as a dictator. He was killed on Christmas eve 1989 and that's the reason why they now have news reports on Christmas eves or so I have heard .
Also Romanian immigrants are called gypsies and they steal/borrow stuff and are expert horsemen . |

@Val- Actually no, the EU croissant crowd is having a hard time with one of the national pastimes of Romania, vampire disposal.
Or "Death Rites", as the BBC tries to politely put it. Whatever you want to properly refer to vampire disposal as, it basically involves either simply driving a stake thru, or outright removal and destruction of the heart of a suspected undead's earthly remains. Then all bets are off as to what happens from there, I'd imagine different parts of the region perhaps have different techniques for seriously dealing with the pesky undead "strigoi". I've read before that the head comes off too oftentimes, just to make sure.
Just the agony of losing a loved one is hard enough, I surely cannot even start to fathom literally digging a relative up and beheading them or ripping out their heart. You know I'm all about turning off the television and all, but purrhaps it's time for the good folks of the Carpathians to get cable or something
Romanian villagers decry police investigation into vampire slaying
If youre up for the trip, you can see one of Vlad Tepest's castles, or the touristy "Castle Dracula" or a 16th century monastery
edit- tweaked paragraphy (is that a word?) and added cool pic of Vlad's pad _________________ “Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving.”-Mark Twain |

Well, if I ever get to a point financially where I could jet over to Romania for a week or so, I just might take you up on that! Quite an historic and interesting place, sort of like Mecca for horror fans. A weekend with Erzebet and Vlad, what more could a horror kid want?
I can just see myself stumbling wet and shivering into "The Bloody Lamb" tavern in some remote mountain forest-primevil type town that time's forgotten on a stormy night. Just like in the movies, the whole place goes quiet and stares at me as soon as I walk in. The bartender tells me they're all out of beer, water, etc. Well at least I know I can call um... "Psycho" to come help me out...
*one ear twitches*
I'd better pack the stake crossbow and holy water super soaker just in case. _________________ “Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving.”-Mark Twain |

.... just remembered sth about count Dracula. He really existed but he wasn't really a nice guy... didn't he crucify like a whole bunch of people and that's how he got that reputation of his ?
And about present times : Romania is not yet in the EU, but is a candidate, am I correct ? along with our neighbours from Croatia, and another two countries ? _________________ now as the lights go down

xSamhainx -> The drink that you'll find in that God forgoton tavern it's something close to grog ("tuica" we call it... very messed up drink anyway).
|comy| -> he didn't crucify people, just put a stick through them. But only enemies, liers and traitors so that doesn't make him such a bad guy (at least not for me). _________________ If the world didn't suck we'd all fell off... |

Well, as an European... I see Romania as a poor transitional state, which is pretty much similar to Bolgaria (except the language and nationalities).
It doesn't have the best reputation around here (neither does Bolgaria )
(I think that) it has some unpopular and chaotic national groups (like the gipsys) in large amounts, which means even worse situation.
But except that (and the stereotype that circus artists mostly come from Romania - as seen in South Park, some movies) I wouldn't be able to tell anything about it (except geographical data and statistics). |

Oh, there is one thing I forgot to ask, Psycho... you see, I have a hobby called linguistics. Your (romanian) language seems very interesting to me... an isle in the middle of different language groups. Could you tell us how did it manage to last that long and why? Do you have any theories where do romanian ancestors come from? I think it would be an interesting reading for most of us :> |
