i am having trouble attacking things

i am sort of a newbie at this type of game but i started gothic II, got some equipment and went out on the path. i found a wolf and tried to attack it and i am having trouble. sometimes when i draw my weapon(space) and hit Left mouse button, the weapon is swung, and other times it is not.

can someone tell me if i am doing somethin wrong

Are you using Gothic 1 or Gothic 2 controls? If you canīt answer this please go to your optios menu and find it out.

The G1 combat system is explained here:
http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=28587

The new system is easier to handle.

OK, if it's the default controls:
1. Hold down the left mouse buton, keep it held down and press the direction arrows in the way that you want the sword to move.

2. You may need to up your dexterity or train in the the weapon that you are using, There are NPC's in the game that will help you to do this.

ad 1: timing is very important. Press one key for every blow, for example if you want to make a left-right... combo press 'D' when the sword is above your sholder.
Mindless clicking is non-productive.

Then you have two options:
1. change to the simpler G2 controls
2. fight your way through the G1 controls

i remember the g1 controls being hard to conquer, and the manual was less than helpful so i figure that a person not accustomed to those controls should go with the new ones...
