Interesting discussion.
I think people attach too much importance to reviews. To me, reviews are just a part of learning about the game. Reviewers are human and have their (unstated) biases, opinions, different PC systems etc...
It's interesting to compare reviews of different games in the same category. For example, many reviews gave Wizardry 8 higher scores than Gothic, even though, for me, Gothic was a much better gaming experience.
I got bored after 6 hours into Wiz 8. I completed Gothic in 3 days, because I could not stop playing. I'm sure someone had the opposite experience. I think there is an unspoken bias against newer games like Gothic in favor of the more traditional and "safe" games like Wiz8 or BG. Hopefully, this will not prevent developer from trying to make new stuff like Gothic.
Just another opinion. |

He's correct about the point if the game offers compatibility with a certain graphics card and OS, it should work with said graphics card and OS.
I just (finally) updated my video card drivers from the out of the box drivers on my GF2 from a year ago to the latest.
Before, everything ran perfectly.
Now, nothing runs.
Since part of basic troubleshooting for these games is the company telling you to go out and get the latest drivers... I think a greater responsibility must be taken to ensure that the latest drivers WORK with your game.
Now, I don't mind uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling the factory provided ones. I'm a computer technician by trade... getting things to work is what I get paid to do. But to the 'average' customer... why should they have to reconfigure their system when everything ELSE works just to get a picky game to run?
(An arguement can be made that CRPG players are like FPS players... above average in the old computer tweaking department, but for impartialities sake let's bypass that.)
This isn't aimed at Gothic in particular, by the way... more at the industry in general. As a technician I KNOW you can't test every possible software/hardware combination... but I think you CAN have people ready to support the inevitable mess competently.

Yep and if Gothic had been a bit more well-known the reviewers opinions would've mattered less I'd think.
What I mean is that many have a tendancy to react more when it's an underdog like Gothic compared to how they would had it been for instance IWD 2.
I'm going to install Win ME in a couple of days on my box, then I'll at least know if it for me is the GF3 or WinXP that causes the fire animations to disappear.(and it seems like the magic ones too...I haven't played much on this box so I never used any magic)
Of course you like the most of us only have one machine, but it'd be nice to know if it's a GF3 or XP problem...
My setup also has a SB Live.(5.1)
I still wonder how you managed to talk to the one speaking German though...
From what I understand it is the removed quest with those breakouts from the new camp.
Them speaking German would be fairly natural since you're not supposed to talk to them at all.(and me they've attacked or ran away from depending on my strength)
Like I wrote though,I didn't find a lot of really wrong statements in your review even though I've had 0 prob's with crashes and so on.(in fact never encountered any obvious bugs at all) |

I thought this review was well written and accurate about most things. It was also generally very positive. I had a less buggy experience than the reviewer, but I can sympathise, because I've been in that situation with other games. The only shortcoming (and this is from memory, so I could be wrong) is that people seem to have forgotten there is a demo... if you have a game which some systems have trouble with, and some don't, step one is to check out which camp you're in, with the demo. This also lets you see if the interface is to your liking.
Demos don't always run identically to full games, but they tend to be very close... I think the reviewer could have pointed that out.
