I'm working on Gothic localization, but now in trouble. I wonder if anyone can send me two files in Gothic 1.08j Un-English Version: Gothic.dat and Menu.dat locate at gothic_workdatascripts_compiled.
Thanks a lot!!!

I want to find out the format of compiled script, but failed.
I think if the un-english version compare to english version, some useful information should be found.

If you get hold of the mod kit and recompile the scripts, you'll end up with something pretty close to the German version.

But I imagine you'd learn a lot more from reading the scripts themselves than poking about in the .dat files...

I haven't get the scripts. I have to do localization without any source. And also the Engine doesn't support double-byte language.

I have modified the engine to show double-byte strings fine, and replace some strings of scripts, but I have to replace all the srings of scripts, so I want to get un-english version to find some useful information of compiled scripts

Hmm. Ok, I could dig those out for you. I don't think there's a copyright issue as both of those files are compiled from source code which PB have made public.

But: You will have much more luck if you get hold of the Mod Development Kit from:

http://www.soulofgothic.4players.de:1065/tools.html

This contains the scripts which make up Menu.dat and Gothic.dat, and you can compile them using Spacer.exe.

If you need more help, just post...

A.

You won´t find a non-English v1.08j.

1.08h latest German version
1.08i Kyro / Radeon classic patch
1.08j English version
1.08k Radeon / GeForce3 patch

Thanks a lot. I have gotten the MOD-development-kit. But found all the document is in German, I don't understand German. Can you tell me how to decompile the DAT-File to scripts and how to compile scripts to DAT-File. Thank you!

Scripts start off as .d files, which are text, and are then compiled to .dat files, which are then packaged to form .vdf files. Thsee .vdf files are the ones actually read by Gothic.

Compiling can be done in a couple of places. With the English version, the safest way is to use Spacer.exe:

World menu - Reparse scriptfiles - choose the .src text file which lists the scripts you want compiled. It will then work through those scripts.

Gothic.dat is formed by compiling all the .d files listed in Gothic.src.

Menu.dat is formed by compiling all the .d files listed in Menu.src.

You should already have all the .d files you need in uncompiled, unpackaged form, as they come with the mod kit, in _workdatascripts.

Packaging and extracting from .vdf files is handled with VDFS.exe, which is also in the mod kit.

Hope this helps

Alistair
