Companion NPC help

I had been traveling with the Barbarian character who wants to find the 'witch' who stole his axe.
Anyway I had him tag along when I went to the area where you recover the Puzzle Box for the fighters guild guy.
ANyway when finished I left up the way I came in, and Barbarian followed, only at the top you have to do a small jump, only he of course just walks sideways and falls down.
In the end I just left him there (hope the drop didn't end up killing him), is there anyway to get him back later or is he doomed to stand there looking stupid for all eternity.
Incidentaly my only major gripe with the game is the AI on the Companion NPCs, it is terrible, I wish you caould make them just stay somewhere and pick them back up later, as they get in the way and get stuck all the time....

I picked up a companion NPC named Tul outside of Suran -- he says he's a slave and needs Redgaurd to help him, and I'm to help find him of course. Anyway, when I talk to him and click the hyperlink "travel together" (after we already have been) I have the option of telling him "No, wait here." Different character I know, but thought I'd mention it.
