Yog Sothoth: "to an accuracy of one pound" just means that you can measure any amount between 1 and 40 pounds Ex: 1,2,3,4,5,6 pounds etc. but, not 1.3 or 5.1 pounds, only whole numbers no half or quarter pounds.
Using 4 stones each with a weight 1, 3, 9 and 27 pounds, you can make any combination of whole numbers between 1 and 40.
If you will have to use the scale to measure Ex. 7 pounds, you put on the scale the following stones 9+1 = 3+X where X is the amount you want to measure, and if it equals 7 pounds the scale will balance.
Another Example: you want to measure 16 pounds: put on the scale: 27+1= 3+9+X Again if X is the amount of 16 pounds the scale will balance! |

"10 pirates are ranked in order, first to last. After finding a treasure chest of 100 gold coins, they are discussing how to divide up the booty. They allow the lowest ranked sailor to divide up the coins and then vote on his idea. If the number of pirates who like the division is equal to or greater than the others who don't like it, then the boss will say, "Make it So." (The proposer of the idea also has a vote.)
Otherwise... well, being pirates their simple solution is to dump the unfortunate sailor into the deep blue sea and let the next pirate in line decide how to divide up the spoils.
Question: How many pirates will be thrown into the sea?
Notes:
Pirates are smart, want money, and love life, especially their own.
This one is harder than average. If you are stuck, think of fewer pirates...
Why would #1 ever vote for any schemes?
Why would #2 ever vote for any schemes?

Okay, my take is this:
1 would never vote yes (if he’s last he gets it all).
2 will only vote yes when it’s down t him and 1 (since a tie wins he would live)
3 will vote yes when only 4 pirates are left
4 will vote yes (knowing 3 will wait ‘till there only 4 left) when there are only 4 left
So my answer is 4 pirates survive, and 6 get tossed into the sea.
Any problems with this answer? (the clues gave it away, I think).
Later on...hmmm I think I goofed, knowing the above logic, 5 through 8 would vote as a block when there are 8 left, since if 5, 6 or 7 vote no, then they will get tossed in after 8 goes. So it looks like 8 survive, and only 2 get tossed. |

The riddle we've been playing with are from http://www.srainc.com/people/brentr/riddles.html, and a lot of them are math oriented.
In answer to your riddle, Where did the Kittens come from? Are there seven in each cat? Do I count the man?
Possible Ans: #Kittens + man? + 7 wives + 49 sacks + 343 cats = 399 + man + kittens. |

After barely making it across the bridge, you hear two of the forest people arguing. It seems that just before they crossed the bridge, they each bought 10 pair of socks, and in fact, as far as color and size go, they each bought the same exact 10 pairs. Each person has 1 pair of green, 1 pair of blue, etc. etc... But now they have accidentally dropped all their socks and the socks are all mixed up in a pile on the ground.
Because it is pitch-black, they can't see what colors the socks are, but want to divide them up so that they each have the same colors that they bought, i.e. identical sets of green, blue, etc. Luckily the socks are all still in pairs, so they only have to pick up 20 pairs, not 40 individual socks.
The light used in crossing the bridge fell into a bottomless forest pit, so even though it is pitch-black, how can you help the two forest people get one pair each of every color, just like they had before they dropped them?
(Note: no lights, moon, cigarette lighter, etc...)
PS Today is a very, very slow work day  |

Apairantly Not: The socks are alike in colour and size. But what about material (silk and cotton). A solution could be that they can feel the difference, but if so it's not a very good riddle. There don't seems to be any math involved, so I searched for a clue in the way the riddle was written, but in lack of better I only found this different material thing! |

There are not many left that are not math oriented, but this one sounds like the sock question...something that is so easy it's hard:
"Enlightenment
Strolling through the forest, you hear a muffled shout. Investigating further, you come to a closed, solid, light-proof door. "... need Light! Light!..." you can barely make out coming through the door.
"Use the switches to know which one controls the Light!" you hear the voice say as you notice three on/off switches beside the door.
Inside the cave is an incandescant lamp which is now off. Next to the door are three switches. One of these three switches turns the lamp in the room on and off.
Your job is to figure out which switch controls the lamp. However, you can't just open the door and look. In fact, you can only enter the cave one time and then you have to say which switch controls the lamp. There are no windows, holes, cracks, leaks, bleeding-heart-liberals, etc. You are allowed to set any switches on or off and then enter the cave. That's it.
What will you do to know with certainty which switch controls the lamp?
Extra credit: what if there are 4 switches? "
Again, I have no idea. My guess is throw all three switches and to H*** with it

Flip the second switch on
Enter the cave
If the light is on, then the second switch is the right one
If the light is off, but the bulb is hot, choose the first switch
If the light is off, but the bulb is cold, choose the third switch
