How high do armor ratings go?

I was lucky and found some Ork Armor in a tomb.
It is rated at 26 each. Helm, chest, and poltroons.

I can't find any boots, gauntlets or anything close to this that I can buy.
Medium armor seems to be in shorter supply then light or heavy.

How high does the rating on armor go?
Does all the really good stuff have to be found?
Or will I find shops with better stuff; everyone seems to sell the same things.

I have money but can't find anything to buy except training and spells.

One more question what is a good spell for attacking from a distance. I don’t have good marksmen skills and no bow so I would like to be able to cast something before they get to me.

I'm still in the early stages of the game doing the quests for the mages guild.

My character is level 5 armor rating 21.

Glass armor, which is the best light armor in the game, has a BASE AR of 50. This is modified by your armor skill. At level 30 with around 70 light armor skill, I have a total of around 75 armor, with a glass helm/boots/cuirass, chitin pauldrons, and the uber agility/str heavy armor gloves.

Still, guards are able to take about 1/8 of my hp away before i dispatch them. 4 or more guards at a time overwhelms me, so no armor will make you invincible. A full suit of glass will still have you hurting at times, but judicious use of potions should make it so you have no problem.

Edit : I know there are ways to enchant armor with 100% sanc so you NEVER get hit, but that's cheating.

I am a Heavy armour specialist. With full Ebony armour with the Helm of Clavicus Vile and the Rangulf gauntlets(20 strength and agility) and my Heavy armour skill around 85, my AR is around 185.

I pissed off the 3 guys on the dock at Ebonheart so I go down there to work on my Heavy armour skill. They can beat on me for around 3-4 minutes before I'd be dead.

with light armor sklll of 100 (before equipment buffs) I am able to get an AC of 166 with glass. I got it to 178 with a 106 in light amor. That is probably the best I will ever get unless I can get some more fortify light amor constant effect stuff. So for all you light amor jumnkies that is what you have to look forward to....

I don't know my exact armor class, but it's almost 250 with a high heavy armor skill (80-90) and piecemeal heavy armor (combination of Ebony, Daedric, and Specials). I'm sure I can go higher with more exploration, but I got bored with that and am trying to crash through the main quest now.

Here's the highest combo I have with Heavy Armour skill at 100, Dragonbone cuirass, Randagulf gaunlets, Helm of Clavicus Vile, and everything else Daedric.

That cuirass also has 100% resistance to fire attacks, and I am a Nord so I am also 100% resistant to frost attacks.
