| Did any of you read the books of the real Berenziah? |

Quite a tale, and it explains how you got to be on the island. WARNING! This is not a spoiler, as this story is readily available in the form of books in the game, but you may wanna read the whole thing rather than just this reader's digest version.
Supposedly, the Emperor Septim isn't himself, but rather the emperor's evil battlemage who uses illusion spells to keep the outer appearance of the emperor. The true emperor has been expelled to another plane of existence. The battlemage's former apprentice found out about his evil scheme and got killed, but beyond the grave she chose you as the champion and "arranged" your release from the prison. It turns out the staff of chaos, the tool with which the battlemage secured his position, is in 2 pieces. One is in the Red Mountain and the other in some dwarven mine (I forget the name). The whole staff is the only way to kill the battlemage as he has become too powerful.
If I misread or misinterpreted the books, someone please correct me.

those books detail the story from the previous elder scrolls games. In this case, ARENA, in arena a guy from the PREVIOUS game, not the current one, is released from prision and yadda yadda you read the books.
