Gothic 2: Review @ Tech TV

Gothic 2 has been <a href="http://www.techtv.com/xplay/reviews/story/0,24330,3592039,00.html" target="_blank">reviewed</a> at Tech TV where it received a score of 4/5 stars:<blockquote><em>"Gothic II" succeeds despite the best effort of its writers and actors. It sounds like the same six buddies of the developer performed all the conversation (and there's more than enough to go around), and they're about as proficient with English as President Bush. Even stranger is the direction. Apparently, someone thought anachronistic caricatures would be good non-playable character templates. You'll encounter Prohibition-era mobsters, an evangelical Southern preacher, and more disgruntled farmwives than you can shake a rolling pin at. And those are just the few identifiable caricatures. The story underlying all this incomprehensible yakking is a good one, but your ears must suffer to experience it.</em></blockquote>

I dunno about the rest of you, but I like my game reviews to be politics-free. Bleh.

Yeah, that joke is as fresh as a Lewinski cigar...

But seriously, folks, that weak dig at W was inappropriate and will only alienate part of the audience.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say this is going to alienate me (I have thicker skin than that ), but I do think it's representative of the 'lesser' standards of game reviewing we see on the Internet.

But hey, it's free, so you gotta keep that in mind too.

Let's not get so sensitive

That's the reviewer's opinion, boys. If you have a different opinion, write your own review. In any case, he's using a perfectly valid analogy, which will be clear to anyone who has heard Bush butcher English.

I think I just did write my own review of his review. It's rather unprofessional to make childish political remarks in a game review. True or not, it doesn't belong there.

The question is, would you still have felt the need to comment had the joke been on one of the democratic presidential canditates?
Considering I can't escape W's influence on the real world, I enjoy every bit of Bush-bashing I caome across. Its a futile form of revenge, but it feels so good...

I am not sure what kind of joke could be made at this point; maybe a reference Kucenich's 0% chance of wilnning...ha ha, no? My objection was to the political nature of the remark, and the fact that it was just bashing and neither funny nor insightful.

Exactly. It simply smacked of a "forced cleverness" that added nothing to the content value of the review.

Fortunately, it was only bad thing about the review. I thought it was pretty solid outside of that.

RPGDot does a fantastic job NOT mixing politics with gaming. This focus on 'gaming only' is what is helping to make RPGdot a success.

Internet Gaming sites are a dime a dozen. And the vast majority of them offer up pretty poor reviews. But they are also free so all one loses when reading a poorly written review is a little time.

But one would think that, if you are trying to create a gaming site and draw a regular audience by the reviews you write, all the while knowing that there are thousands of other gaming sites out there competing with you, that you would make a special note to really focus on the subject of gaming.

But that's fine. Gaming sites that want to spotlite their 'cleverness' with saavy political analogies or with an assortment of sitcom-quality quips can go right ahead.

But like another poster already pointed out, I for one, won't be re-visiting sites like that.

I was the Guest a few posts up. TechTV is a more than just a fly-by-night gaming site, so it's a bit surprising. Recently, with so many entertainers showing their political panties, it shouldn't be.
