Gothic 3: Interview @ WoG |
|
World of Gothic has put up an interview with Kairo and Michael from the Piranha Bytes today. It is mainly dedicated to the upcoming, third, sequel to Gothic series. However, it is entirely in German, so I took the liberty to point a thing or two out:

At the moment, Gothic 3 has the sole attention of the Piranha Bytes team.

The story is not yet finished, but the idea is to design both the story and the game simultaneously. It will mainly concentrate on the motivations of the Gods' for waging the war, although some of Xardas' secrets should also be revealed.

The size of the new world will be considerably bigger, but nothing more specific on this subject.

It is not yet clear whether there will be horses in the game, or any other "ridding" animals for that matter, as the topic is complex.

The hero will have certain skills and reputation at the start of the game, opposing to the first two sequels.

The statistics' system will be changed considerably, but the basics are left as they are.

The most part of the engine will be completely rewritten by the team, even though some licenced components will stay untouched, so that the final product will differ considerably from anything it might have started from.

The music will be changed for the better, but will preserve it's original spirit.

The (dis)advantages of certain weapons will be emphasized, so that it will actually matter whether you wield a sword, mace or something else.

And, it seems that the new sequel will bring adjustable difficulty levels with it.

There is also a picture of the current character design, be sure to check it out! |

Since they're rewriting the engine, can I assume that this will not be out until at least 2005? With the English version coming in 2006? I am really trying to supress a knee-jerk bitch about English Night of the Raven, here, so....DOH! There I go again! |

If you were serious, then I would say it is way too early for that. |

People have you all seen that screenshot/artwork
here is the link (the picture is a little big)
http://www.worldofgothic.de/gothic2/images/Nordmann_style.jpg
I'll translate (summary):
Northman/Viking style
- Patchwork armor
- Metal is covered with leather and hides and only glims trough now and then
- Orcbones as trophies are used
- Rastacoupe!! braids or pigtails (used a translator for this one )
- Perhaps a scout wearing a light armor
- Face tattoos
Gothic 3 is already becoming awesome

The big news here, is they haven't licenced another engine !
It's a rare thing in this industry to use the same engine for a game and two sequels !!!
And in that case; it's goooood. |

The engine for Gothic 3 is being done from scratch, you know, which pretty much makes it a different one... The thing with the engine is that it started from a licenced one (rumors say its the CryEngine), but then the game requires drastic changes to it, so the final product will be so different that the original, that Piranha Bytes probably doesn't want to blaze up the fire by revealing which one exactly. That's how I see it. |

err... ok.
If I understand conrrectly, they licenced an engine ( rumors says the Far Cry's one ) and they rewrote most of it.
So it's always the same : devellopers can't keep the engine they wrote to make it better and better at each iteration..... at least after two games...
Strange. |

Yes, that's what they said.

Well, the original engine did look undisputabely pretty on the second sequel, but it wasn't very functional from the start. You must admit, it's quite sluggish... I think it's for the better they decided to make a new one, with an accent on movement and combat first. Somehow I'm sure the rest won't suffer. |

Then get ready for more 'sluggish-ness'. The Far Cry engine is a huge resource hog. It needs more PC hp compared to Halo pc version, Half Life 2's Source, and the Unreal Warfare engine.. _________________ The world is small, nasty and complicated, and everybody dies alone... - Sam Fisher |

Nope, they didn't say that. They said most of engine is made by themselves and only certain parts are licensed like EmotionFx. That "rumors" about the FarCry engine are mostly wishful thinking of some members of the german forum. |

Thanks, guest :
A translator bot helps me to clear all that stuff :
There's a direct question to Cairo about the engine :
Question : Is the engine used for Gothic III completely licenced or only parts of a bought engine are used? (...)
Cairo : There are licenced components, but we develop ourselves the engine's heart.
( hacked auto-translation by me )
Now that's "klar" ( at least a bit more )
Nevertheless, I can't understand why they're so reluctant about naming what they have licenced. ???
Anyway, as always, it's all about gameplay, immersion and spirit. |

As I understand it from the interview an engine & tool set has been licensed. I assume because it gives the project a kickstart. So much of the 3rd party engine will be replaced by new code that we wouldn´t recognize the engine even if we knew which one of the mentioned candidates it is.
Maybe the engine choice is obvious and unspectacular. The Cry engine is no option because a shipped title is a requirement to prove stability. There was none when the decision had to be made. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |
