My warrior char levels much faster than my mage..
   

Hiya all. I recently finished the game's main quest with an altmer/mage/ the mage. I did lots of great house & guild missions and a lot of exploration, and finished at lvl 32.
My boyfriend also plays MW, as a warrior. He has not played as many hours as me, but his char is lvl 50+.
Now, I too play with a pure warrior char (nord/warrior/the warrior), and it really seems like this type of char levels up much easier.
Is it just me, or is anyone else experiencing this too?
One of the major problems with being a mage, is that you have to rest a LOT because of the spell points, and exp in the arcane arts doesn't come easy..

Magic is really difficult in this game. I reckon to have any chance you have to specialise in one school, and when creating your char put as much as possible into that skill. Also, I found I never had enough Magicka, so if I was to play a Mage char again I'd go for the Sign that gives bonus Magicka.

I've been playing a custom Mage/Thief class ("Kleptomage") and I've pretty much switched to using a short sword for combat, even though it's a misc skill! in fact, I think I'm higher in Short Blade than I am in one of my main magic skills! I was also using Hand to Hand, which levelled up really quickly, but it's true that using a weapon is *so* much quicker - especially if you enchant it with Absorb Health! (In fact I reckon this is one of the best tips for a fighter).

The other problem with magic is that it takes so long to cast spells and is not practical in combat. And as for scrolls, forget it!

The only magic skills that can be useful even at low levels are Enchant and Alchemy. Alchemy goes up pretty quickly, and the potions you can make are *so* much more powerful - and lighter - than the ones sold in shops. There are exceptions, but in general you can do with Alchemy what the other passive schools can do and better, as you can quaff a potion during a fight and not take a hit.

Enchant is a tricky one. You can make some useful spells at low levels (the Absorb Health on stike is a great example) but it is near impossible to power level in Enchant because of the limited supply of gems. Also, the succees rate is *terrible*! There is no indication of what makes or breaks an enchantment. However, like Alchemy, you can do whatever the other schools so without having the hit on your Magicka. You do however have to buy all the spells first, but then you don't need to be high level for them to work!

I think playing a mage just requires you to play very differently than a pure fighter, and maybe that's what is bugging people. I agree it's harder though, but it can be loads of fun if you accept the fact that you have to take things easy.

I say this but at the same time I agree, and mages don't suit my playing style very well. But, you know, maybe the same could be said about fighters versus thieves. I played a fighter class and before the fifth day I was allready level 10! My main char is a thief and after 10 days I was maybe half way there, around level 5. But I see that as a thief I start leveling much faster after I hit level 10 since by then my sneak skill is much higher and I can be more successful at the things I do best.

In regards to casting I have been finding out that magic is coming of more of a thing to do with my assasin since levitating over a wall is alot better than just running around. The magicka is what is really pissing me off though. I know people are making lots of potion to regen potion and all that but if someone what a specilaize mage and only have as much mana as a thief because they have the same intel just doesn't make any sense to me. Oh well....I leveled my guy to 50 pretty easy as well. Thieving skills seem to go up pretty quikc since with regard to combat skill, you have to find the stuff to kill as with a thief you can gain levels in towns just as quick.

Some tips for Mages:

Use target spells at range (even try debuffing your opponent rather then killing them outright so you can use them to "train"). Use buff and defensive spells on yourself (Alteration, Illusion and Restoration all have these). Try using touch based spells in combat so that you can build your unarmed/heavy/light/medium armor skills and if you have Alchemy you can drink heal potions to continue healing as they beat on you or use a spell like restoration's Righteousness (to drain opponent's health and heal yourself). Also keep in mind that you have the ability to drain your opponents mana and/or absorb it ! Low on mana? Steal your opponents.

In the example above you are building at least 4 or 5 skills. I think Bethesda may have in fact made magick too powerful (as you have basically almost any option and/or combination of spell effects available in the spellbuilder)... but they did a wonderful job with magic based leveling. In every RPG to date I have played (both table-top and electronic) the mage class is always slowest to build but most powerful in the long run.

Just my thoughts.

That is very true. I could just imangine being a lv 50 pure mage with a 100 skill in most magic skills. Besides the lack of magicka, I am sure I could have done something about that by then.

I beg to differ. It ALWAYS helps to have backup when you have more then one badass NPC coming at you. A couple of bonelords or a Flame Andorach (sp) come in very handy. Just keep your distance from the Flame guy. I can take out one guy and while my gang is beating up on the others I can restore mana and/or health in the comfort of knowing that I wont be beat on while doing it. You can also use the summoned creatures to slow down the mob (in case you miscalculate how big a baddass you are) while you high tail it out of dodge so you can come back latter to do some wupass on em.

My warrior character usually has no trouble with mobs. But you need to be carefull with a mage type character. It took me a while and several beatings to realise this. I like getting up close and personal and do it a lot with my Redguard warrior. But with my Breton mage that aint real smart. The Breton has no trouble (usually) on a one-on-one, but needs help when being mobed.

I agree. Getting too close to the baddies is NOT a good idea when playing as a frail, unarmored or lightly armored mage. I usually summon a storm acronaut or a golden saint, then levitate or hide while they do the fighting for me. Works like a charm, but my mage always carries LOTS OF scrolls and enchanted items. The amount of magika is maxed out at 300, and I always run dry when facing a mob. Summoning one storm acronaut takes nearly half of my spell points. I can use a short blade against weaker enemies, but without the backup scrolls & enchanted items, I'm toast.
I always prefer playing as a magic-user, but it's interesting to try something else too. MW seems like a totally different game when playing as a warrior. Less tactics, more hack & slash. And (nearly) just as fun.

Points taken. Maybe I just don't have the patience :p

I think I screwed up the skill balance with my Kleptomage, as a lot of the Illusion skills on the Mage side were pretty much covered by the Sneak skill of the Thief. Also, why bother enchanting and brewing potions when I can just nick them? :p

Time for another character I feel. My guy is now so beefed up with enchanted Strength fortifiers and increased weapons skills (I have so much money from thieving that I can afford to train up to lvl 60 on misc skills) that it has become too easy. Her magic skills are unused.
