Can anyone explain the "test of patterns"?

OK, don't make fun of me! In the Numchleft(spelling!) ruin. I tried the search engine but found no help. What's your advice? Thanks.

It's not really much of a puzzle. There are three steam devices you can manipulate. Three of them will burn you but the third opens a door. I think it's the farthest to the right, facing the steam machines.
