Gothic used to run...now it doesn't!

I have the following system:
Windows XP
950 MhZ Processor
256 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200 (64 MB RAM)
Onboard sound (VIA AC'97 Audio Controller)

Gothic has run fine for quite some time, but suddenly I'm getting the following Error:

C:zMusic_DM.cpp(2(MusicSys_DirectMusic::Init()

) Failed to initialize synth

It sounds like a sound-related error to me.

I've tried:
*Reinstalling the game
*Updating sound/video drivers
*Updating to DirectX 8.0
*Getting into the INI file to kill the splash screen
*Uninstalling the software I've installed since the errors started (Antivirus program)

I'm currently uninstalling the game again, killing all the remaining registry entries and reinstalling the game again, now that all the drivers and things are updated. So far, nothing has worked, however, and I'm just wondering if there's any other solution I may have missed for this particular error.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Something else I forgot to mention was that I have also tried installing the latest Gothic Patch (1.0 and that has not worked either.

Thanks,

The error message is obviously sound related. You should try to completely disable sound and music in the gothic.ini. If it runs you somehow destroyed your sound drivers and/or sound related DirectX part.

I hope you only applied the 1.08k patch, not one of the older German ones?

Gothic doesnŽt like other programs running in the background. YouŽd better close everything, especially o/c tools, virus scanners and MS Office indexing.

Good luck.

Perhaps dxdiag can tell you something useful. Goto Start, Run and enter dxdiag. If that doesn't work, search your harddisk for dxdiag.exe.
