Lockpicking training

The carpenter in Khorinis (can't remember his name) won't train me to pick locks, he says he doesn't know if he can trust me enough!
What do I have to do to get him to train me.
I've also been told there is a note in the bandits cave to get me into the theives guild, near anil's farm, but i can't find them! Anyone know how to get to it? is there a map online with details???

As to the lockpicking - talk to the carptenter somemore ... there is something he wants you to do.

As to the thieves guild ... post this in the spoilers section to get an answer.

I've asked him about everything that is available and still have no luck, the only options I have left are asking to learn to pick locks and to buy lockpicks.

Moved to spoilers.

Talk to Matteo the trader and to the carpenter's daughter. She owes Matteo money. Solve this dilemma without resorting to violence, and Thorben the carpenter will be grateful and tell you how to pick locks.

Thanks for correcting me Jaz.

I've nothing in my logbook about matteo's money, and when I've talked to him and gritta there isn't any reference to a side-quest. Is it possible to progress too far to get it as i'm lvl 6 and in the militia?
In which case - where is the bandits camp entrance near anil's farm?
Are there any other characters that will teach me lockpicking?

Hmmm... if you're in the Militia, you are already a citizen, so the Gritta/Matteo thing won't work anymore.

You might also try to get Lehmar the moneylender's book and show it to Thorben.
Alternatively, you might try to join the thieves guild, Ramirez teaches lockpicking as well.

So how do I get the book? Do I just go and beat the guy up?
Where do I find ramirez?

Either go and beat him up (but you'd better have one of Ignaz' Oblivion scrolls handy to make him forget about it, or you'll have to pay a fine), or steal the book if you're skilled enough.

You'll find Ramirez at the thieves' guild = in the sewers. But to actually get there, well... that's another adventure. No matter what, you'll have to make the guild take notice of you, either by helping them via several quests you might get at the harbor inn, or by foiling their plans.
Once you attracted their attention this or the other way, they'll send someone for (or after) you...

If this is the money lender you are talking about, I had no problem killing him ... just make sure there is no one else in his house at the time *grin*. Then grab his book and you are golden. No one ever seemed to notice that I'd off'd the slime ball.

Of course I was a merc at the time
