Realms of Arkania Series Question.... |
|
Whatever happened to the team that made the three classic CRPG Arkania games?
I enjoyed them and have been disappointed by the lack of a sequel. I think they were German developed, and was wondering if the designers ever did anything else to follow up those games. Just wondering. |

The lead designer (or producer ?) Guido Henkel had offers to make Wizardry 8and Planescape Torment. He chose the latter. After some disappointing experiences during the production he retired from the industry. He worked a few years on a website about DVDs or movies, I donīt remember. Now he founded a company to produce games for portable devices.
Attic started development of another RPG in the DSA universe, Armalion. They went bankrupt before the game could be finished. The remainings were swallowed by Ascaron, they are now working on a new project. Of course Ascaron officially denies that Sacred has any links to Armalion because they donīt have a DSA license.
According to Henkel the DSA games didnīt earn a lot of money because Attic had signed a bad early contract with the license holder which granted him a big part of the profit. A small developer canīt survive if everything has to be divided by 3 (developer, publisher, license holder). Henkel left the company in anger after the other shareholders didnīt agree to leave the DSA license behind and do something profitable. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

The site was www.dvdreview.com . His wife is the owner of the site. He helped out reviewing movies for some time.

Small correction here. Attic never worked on Armalion. Attic went bankrupt in 1998 while co-developing LMK (The Lady, The Mage and The Knight) together with Larian Studios (Divine Divinity) from Belgium.
The company that was working on Armalion was Ikarion (also from Germany). |

Wrong : Attic started LMK - The Lady, The Mage and The Knight. They qarreled about that with co-developing company Larian Studios.
They split, Larian made Divinity, and Attic was seemingly getting bancrupt.
As it seems today, some remains of Attic must still exist somehow, because I've seen the Realms of Arcania series being repackaged and republished by Shoebox, who also published Gothic 1 here in Germany.
The other information is correct - apart from the fact that it was Ikarion, who developed Armalion. |
