I am using Hercules (Detonator v23.82) drivers at 1154x864.

There should not be any performance improvement going to WinXP. WinXP is just the assimilation of Win98SE features on the WinNT foundation. WinXP will require substantially more RAM because of its kernal size and memory/disk management features. The advantages of WinXP are security and some say stability. WinXP's purpose is to move users to a Microsoft controlled environment that is easier for the end-user to maintain as well as providing security and stability to compete with Linux. Please note that Microsoft no longer officially supports Win98SE because they believe you should have upgraded by now. All hail the gods of the Microserfs.

OT:
On another note, Linux will have its version of a DirectX environment that game progammers can use to develop within the next 18-24 months. Right now you must use a variety of tools to emulate the power of the DirectX library. Once commercial games are viable on Linux (without the hodge podge of tools), I believe Microsoft will finally have a competitor.

Storm:
I would like to e-mail it to you but I am not willing to open that can of worms by posting an e-mail address here and getting five million requests. is there some place I can upload a copy so everyone can link to it and download their own?

Is it worth it?

Hello guys. I just wanted to know if it worth it for me to upgrade my video card. I've been reading those posts for 3-4 days now.
My specs are
AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz
512 mb SDRAM
32 mb TNT2 64

I was wondering if i shold upgrade my video card to Geforce 4Ti 4600 (for $360) I am not a computer guy, so I dont even know if Geforce 4Ti 4600 will run with my comp.

Thnx in advance.

i've only used the customizeXP program and the line to force windows to use RAM before swap and the game is MUCH more playable in 1024x768, with quincunx (tbird 800, geforce 4mx 440, 512 ram, winxp)

Quincunx

Could someone please tell me what Quincunxx is? I have been over the boards a bit, and seen it mentioned, but not really explained. If I missed it, sorry. Been away from hardware and OS tweaks for a few years.

Now, if you want a Cisco routing question answered, I am your man.

Why do I need to create a new desktop shortcut? The patch and the original file have the same name don't they?

Quincunx in this context is a form of Anit-Aliasing that gives AA close to that of AA x4 but at a much lower performance hit. It still costs more than AA x2.

There's not many cards out there that wouldn't be better than what you have. However, you may not see the performance increase you would expect by getting a 4600 with this game. This game is heavily CPU limited. If you have the money to blow, why not get a 4600. I'm sure this isn't the only game you play or eveer intend to play.

Shurik, I would definitely recommend upgrading your video card. With a 1.2 gig cpu you should see a speed increase and if nothing else the game will look a whole lot better! If a GeForce4 Ti 4600 seems a little steep you might go for a 4400 instead.

MORE IS BETTER!!!

I just upgraded my RAM from 384MB to 512MB and IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERNCE!!!!! Although the infamous "FPS" only went up a few numbers (I still don't believe this is actual frames per second!) visually I could see a difference in load times and screen refresh.
Overclocking to 897MHz from 866MHz did nothing.

While I was talking to my buddy at the store I asked him what would be a good performance upgrade for my next system. He recommended an Intel 2GHz on ASUS with 512MB RAMBUS and new power supply/case. I could get this for <$1000Canadian (approx. $600US). Pop quiz...guess where I live?

Okay you have me confused now. I suggest you post here your hardware and software config. Make sure you did a defrag BEFORE you installed Morrowind. This is very important.

Let's recap....

If I have Customizer2000 (purchased version) under Windows98SE with 384MB RAM. When I open Customizer2000 I have following settings:

Tweak RAM =
RAM Optimizer: Target 64MB and Min 16MB, Free Up 2MB every 4min if < 50%. More options is set at Free Up 288MB RAM at Start-up.

File Cache: Network Server, move Read Ahead Cache to 512KB.

Disk Cache: Multimedia System.

For the other settings read the help and use your judgement. Especially under Registery Tweak tab icon "System" make sure "Use RAM as Much as Possible" is checked off. My system is listed in the first post of this topic, expect I know have 512MB RAM and my ToshibaMD1212 DVD/CD drive is 36x (I marked the wrong speed).

When I say that it runs well, it still has slight jerky movements in crowds in the city. I believe this is a CPU power issue and is why I have asked the forum member's opinion on my upgrade choice. I love this game, waited 2 years for it and I want the penultimate system to run it (when cash permits ).

I agree with users that say this does not run as smoothly as Gothic or Half-Life, but as a programmer I have to tell you that we are not comparing apples to apples. To give us the power to build and get the product out on budget in this millenium choices had to be made. My prayer is that we can add the bells and whistles that have not been added.

hmm..

I don't konw, it is a hard desicion for me. I want to see those cool water effects and many more stuff that my video card don't support. There is a question whether I should go against my parents will or not. They don't want me to buy a $360 video card, but hey its my money. Another question is how can I check my memory usage % in WinXP Pro? And I read someting about swap file? what is that? To make Morrowind use CPU ram instead of video card memory?

Thnx

The GeForce4 Ti4300 and Ti4200 are a great cards. Consider these as
low cost altenatives to the Ti4600 and they will definitely get all the visual juice out of Morrowind.
