You can get a quest later on for the Thieves guild whereby you have to persuade the heads of the Fighters Guild to join your cause. If you convince Eydis Fire-Eyes to join, then she won't ask you to get the Code Book any more. (She will say something about the 'code book' but when you click on it she says "I am no longer fighting against the Thieves Guild" or something like that).

For those of you having trouble pickpocketing, there seems to be some confusion about the governing skill. Yes you need to be sneaking or camoflaged when you make the attempt but the factor that determines your success is your Security skill, not Sneak. This is according to the manual and my game experience seems to bear it out.
