I'm level 8 or so... I tried to go back to the west camp to get magic ability from that magician, but now he won't help me since I'm a shadow...

So do I get magic ability in the old camp somehow?

Yes. Talk to Milten in the castle yard, and be patient.

Yes, be patient. In certain point of story you will be able to choose - guard or firemage.

Use the tip I posted to get Guard's armor and still become a Mage.
